We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joselin Fuller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joselin, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found purpose in learning that anything done with the intention to be of service is greater than prayer. I found that I could use my talents and character traits to be a positive force in the lives of others while honoring my authentic way of being. I love being of service and unless the work I do is infused with this attitude, I cannot be as productive or effective. I cannot be my true self unless I am serving a greater cause or empowering others to find their purpose and power. Whether it’s doing chores at home, solving a complex case at work, donating to an important cause, or getting a diploma, discovering where you can best be of service is the way to find your unique purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have my hands full with many things. Staying busy fuels me with purpose as new challenges force me to grow and they expand my perspective.
Early this year, I returned to school to complete a Bachelor’s degree online and I am about halfway done. I became a licensed Life and Health Insurance broker which I enjoy more than I could have ever thought and find that I am helping many people navigate these complicated American healthcare systems. I am also an Operations Manager for Epic Fighting MMA and it is one of the most challenging roles I have ever taken on and is very rewarding.
Prior to all these professional developments I was a professional MMA athlete and Martial Arts Coach. Coaching kids and helping elevate their potential through Martial Arts is by far the best thing I have ever done in life. I aspire to become a kids and teens mindset coach and launch a podcast aimed at empowering this overlooked age group.
I plan to return to the cage again to give that part of my life a proper goodbye before dedicating my time to creating this mindset coaching enterprise. For now, I continue to train in various combat arts and occasionally complete at local tournaments.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Quality: Lightheartedness combined with diligence
Don’t take anything overly serious as though it’s life or death, unless it truly is. Accept that nothing, outside of your own actions, is in your control. That should not frighten you. It should set you free.
With this lightened load, commit to following through on whatever you set forth. Whether it be washing your dirty plate or completing a complicated assignment. Once you have put your best intention into motion, you must release expectations and make the next move happen.
Skill: Language
Words have immense power, and they can build a dream into a tangible reality, or completely destroy an empire. Whether you only speak one language or several, we have to develop a strong command of language so that it serves us in conversation. A good speaker builds connections everywhere and provokes all sorts of thoughts and ideas in the listener. Language is so much more than words. It is a powerful device that can be used in so many powerful ways!
Area of Knowledge: Humanities and Finance
These two things seem like total opposites, but I think they go together like spicy tajin on fresh fruit. Humanities allow you to put humanity as a whole into a developmental perspective. Going into a few deep dives of several cultures helps you become more connected to the many threads that weave the tapestry of this complex society.
Finance, well, it speaks for itself. Learning even just how to how to create a budget or how to manage your work retirement benefit sets you up for financial stability in the very least, and leads you toward early financial freedom at best!
Putting them together opens doors and opportunities for your own growth and for any type of person that can learn from you.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I am finding that my super power of wearing many hats and juggling several roles in my personal and professional life is getting to be too much and I need to find balance so I don’t burn out.
Being overly busy is also causing me to struggle with being present in my personal life and I don’t want it to to affect my most meaningful relationships.
My jobs also require me to be on the computer and phone constantly. All this screentime is taking a toll on my length of focus. Balance is so important and so are boundaries in any are of life. This challenge is calling me to reassess where I stand and if what I’m prioritizing currently serves my purpose and health.
