We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Ibarra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
As a first generation Latina, I was the first in my family to do many things. First to go to college, first to graduate with a doctoral degree, first to start a business. At the young age of 15, I lost my Tia (aunt) to cancer and surgical malpractice. It stirred up a fire inside of me to want to be a prudent provider, prevent disease, and help my community.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I founded Health Haus with a simple mission- to inspire health in the world. Our current healthcare system is really a sick-care model, and I wanted to change that concept. I set out on a mission to focus on preventative health care–where we start at the beginning and that means attempting to prevent the disease from occurring in the first place. The key is to be proactive about your health to help prevent the disease from occurring.
That is where Health Haus steps in. Health Haus is a wellness clinic & club that focuses on just that – proactive and preventative medicine. Using clinically-researched, advanced wellness modalities, we help improve key health metrics within your body to help prevent disease in the long run. There are things you can do today, right now, to improve your health, and help prevent illness or disease that might occur years down the road, and that wellness journey starts at Health Haus!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the qualities that have been most impactful are
1) Curiosity
2) Grit
3) Life Mission
These three qualities have kept me grounded on my journey. My curiosity allows me to step outside the box, dream big, and look for solutions to problems. My Grit is the reason why I keep going on days I feel like giving up, and the reason why I continue to push past obstacles thrown my way. My life mission is my reason for existing, It’s what fuels my passion and what continues to inspire me along this both beautiful and chaotic life.
For folks early in the journey, I can not emphasize preparation enough. Research, look for mentors, read books, get immersed in what you want to achieve.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I do believe that you should cater and nurture to your strengths, but also feel that investing in areas where you want to grow is key. For example, I am dual certified in two fields. One of them being pediatrics and another in family practice. Both are amazing in their respects, but completely different in the way we treat the population. As though those two specialties were not enough–, I wanted to bring a holistic approach to my practice. So I went on to study and learn about functional medicine and the ways to treat my patients from a root cause approach. The way I see it, is you’re a novice in everything until you dedicate yourself to become an expert. I do however, believe in delegating certain tasks or roles to people who live in their passions–for example accounting and lawyers. To put it simple invest in areas you want to grow in and that fuels your passion. Don’t waste time in areas that are daunting to you.
