We were lucky to catch up with Tina Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tina, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
As a tattoo artist, I often felt overwhelmed by self-doubt as I compared my work to others. I decided to focus on my unique strengths instead of my insecurities. I set small goals to improve my shading techniques, celebrating every successful tattoo.
I began posting my work online, and the positive feedback from clients and followers helped me appreciate my talents. Gradually, I transformed from just a tattoo artist into a storyteller, creating meaningful connections with my clients.
Taking on larger projects, like my first full sleeve tattoo, marked a turning point. Completing it filled me with pride and a sense of accomplishment. I realized that building confidence was a journey of self-acceptance. Now, as I work in my own studio, I celebrate my individuality and the supportive community around me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a tattoo artist specializing in large-scale Asian tattoos, I bring stories and cultural significance to life through my art. Each piece I create is not just a tattoo; it’s a personal narrative that reflects the unique journey of my clients. I take pride in my ability to shade and create clean, crisp designs that stand the test of time. My goal is to make each tattoo not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.
What excites me most about tattooing is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. I love hearing their stories and translating those emotions and experiences into artwork that they can carry with them forever. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how my art can empower individuals and serve as a symbol of their personal milestones.
I’m thrilled to announce the opening of my own private tattoo studio! This new space allows me to create an intimate and personalized environment for my clients, where they can feel comfortable and inspired during their tattoo journey. It’s a dream come true, and I’m eager to share this experience with everyone.
Additionally, my books will open on November 8, and I can’t wait to start working with new clients and create unique projects. Beyond tattoos, I want to create content that explores various aspects of art, including streetwear, cooking, and more. I believe that art is everywhere, and I’m excited to share my passion and insights across these diverse topics. I also plan to host fun creative projects, like wine and art nights, where everyone can join in and express their creativity in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey as a tattoo artist, the three most impactful qualities have been my artistic skill development, cultural knowledge and sensitivity, and interpersonal skills; my advice for beginners is to practice continuously, immerse themselves in the cultures they wish to represent, and build strong relationships with clients, all while embracing challenges and staying true to their authentic artistic voice.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents came to America as immigrants from Vietnam, carrying dreams of a better life for their family. They worked tirelessly, instilling in me the importance of education. “Study hard,” they always reminded me, hoping I would follow a traditional path to a stable career, but I found my passion in tattooing. When I revealed my dreams, their initial shock turned to concern. My parent said, “Tattooing isn’t a real career.” Yet as I immersed myself in the craft, they began to see my dedication. My mom even came to me for a tattoo, as I worked on her, I saw pride replace doubt in her eyes.
Now, my parents stand beside me, cheering me on as I create meaningful art. They’ve learned to embrace my journey, and together, we celebrate a path that honors our heritage while allowing me to follow my dreams. My art isn’t just ink; it’s a powerful connection to my roots and a vibrant expression of who I am.
