We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Starr Alexandra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Starr below.
Starr, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been a challenging obstacle of mine. One of the best things I started doing for myself was celebrating the small wins. It’s super important to acknowledge where you are in your journey and how far you’ve come. I also pay attention to the negative self-talk and replace it with positive affirmations. There’s been times where I participated in fashion events where I felt I wasn’t ready, or my collection wasn’t good enough. Addressing my feelings and reframing from negativity early in the creative process serves the greater good because it’ll ultimately allow me to create a safe space for myself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What’s up everybody! I’m Starr, with two R’s, and I’m a creative/fashion designer from Michigan. My brand specializes in custom 1 of 1 pieces, limited time collections, memorial pieces, editorial looks, and fashion show exclusives. The most exciting thing about what I do is being able to create garments completely from scratch. The process of making clothes is so intriguing to me because you get to witness every step of creating from start to finish. Another thing I love is being recognized for my work when I’m out in public. People frequently come up to me and say, “You’re the girl that makes clothes.” It’s such a blessing to be able to share my talent with the world.
As many fashion shows I’ve participated in I never organized my own. With that being said, the next event is one that I’m conducting myself. It’ll be a season one fashion show for my brand. I haven’t promoted it yet, so you all have an exclusive. It’ll be held in Detroit, MI towards the start of Summer 2025 so be on the lookout for flyers and links!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three skills that were the most impactful on my journey is patience, creativity, and networking. Patience is a game for the long run and having it helps to minimize errors. Being able to thoroughly plan and take into consideration everything within a project will not only save you money but it’ll make the process less stressful as well. Creativity is a no brainer, when you’re in the industry I’m in its so important to think outside the box and be innovative. Art is subjective so focus on creating things that spark conversation and inspire others. In my opinion networking is one of the most important aspects of any field. You can be the most qualified individual with no following if you don’t market yourself. Networking will get you into places that other avenues can’t. The best way to improve on these skills is to go to events and/or places that spark inspiration but also give yourself enough grace to mess up and learn different techniques that better advance your craft.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Bible has played an important role in my development because there’s literally a solution for every problem in it. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Matthew 6:34 which reads “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” As an entrepreneur I understand the anxiety that comes with wanting to know what’s next in your career. It’s super important to focus on one thing at a time in order to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed and burned out. The Bible also teaches us about obedience and that’s important for entrepreneurs as well because it forces us out of our comfort zones and into the unknown which is always rewarding when we least expect it. When we get out of our own way and let God do his thing the blessings become abundant. Lastly, I want to share the verse Luke 1:37 which reads “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” If I wanted all business owners to take one thing from this interview it would be to just get started. Don’t worry about every detail. If God has placed it on your heart to do something just go for it. He will provide you with what you need along the way. Don’t waste your dreams and don’t waste your talents, they were given to you for a reason.
