We recently connected with Seulgi Kim and have shared our conversation below.
Seulgi, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
To keep my creativity alive, I draw inspiration from everything around me. Living in New York is especially energizing, with its constant flow of new experiences and surprises. From hidden gallery exhibits to impromptu street performances, there’s always something unexpected that sparks new ideas.
I love visiting museums and reading books, as they open up new worlds and perspectives. I also regularly follow my favorite artists, including painters, ceramicists, writers, and photographers, to stay connected to diverse creative expressions and techniques. By immersing myself in the city’s energy and engaging with the work of other creators, I keep my creative mindset refreshed and ready to explore new ideas.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a motion designer based in New York, with a passion for storytelling that goes back to my earliest memories. What drew me to motion design was the way it blends storytelling, design, and animation to bring ideas to life in dynamic, visual ways. I started my career in 2018, and since then, I’ve been growing and evolving in this field.
Much of my work has been focused on creating promotional videos for Nick Jr. shows like Baby Shark and Blue’s Clues, where I use both 2D and 3D animation skills to engage young audiences and add a layer of excitement to their favorite characters. One of the most exciting projects I’ve been part of was Nickelodeon’s rebrand, which involved bringing back the iconic splat logo with a fresh twist for a new generation. This was a large-scale, collaborative project where we all supported one another and brainstormed new ideas for Nick Jr., ultimately helping to reshape the brand’s visual identity.
This project, and the collaborative spirit behind it, was a defining moment in my career, pushing me to grow as both a designer and team player. I’m excited about continuing to bring creative ideas to life through motion design and look forward to future projects that allow me to expand and challenge my skills even further.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I believe that persistence, resilience, and curiosity have been very important qualities. As a motion designer, I often feel like a multitasker. It is essential to stay updated on trends, be willing to learn new skills, and have a passion that drives you to push your limits.
The industry changes rapidly, with new software, features, and techniques constantly emerging. To succeed, you need to dedicate time to keep up with these changes, and these qualities are crucial for that.
Curiosity is especially important because it encourages you to explore new ideas and techniques. Embracing the learning process is vital, even when it involves setbacks or failures. Each challenge presents an opportunity for growth and contributes to your career development.
For those just starting out, I recommend focusing on these qualities. Stay curious, embrace challenges, and remember that persistence and resilience will guide you through the ever-evolving landscape of motion design.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The most helpful individuals in my journey have been my artist friends and colleagues. Their incredible talent and passion have profoundly impacted my development as a motion designer. They have helped me overcome challenges by offering diverse perspectives and constructive feedback.
Working alongside these creative individuals has kept me inspired and motivated. Interacting with them not only refreshes my thoughts but also challenges me to break free from stereotypes. Through collaboration, I have discovered skills and qualities within myself that I wasn’t aware of before.
Each of my colleagues has contributed something valuable, whether it’s a new technique, a different approach to problem-solving, or insights into the industry. I have absorbed these lessons and integrated them into my own work, allowing me to grow and adapt. Their support has been essential in building the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in this competitive field.
