We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rico Mangram a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rico, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Work Ethic comes from being in IT as a Sr. Network Engineer and learning how to process situations This has helped me be a great part in solving problems and being more organized to help my talkshow run smoothly. This also helps me teach others on my staff to learn how to stay on time during the show and being able to stay professional with our guests and other events.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my business as a talkshow host as an Emcee first, and when I started my business as an Emcee for weddings and Quinceaneras, when I was emceeing a wedding in Lake Forest IL, during dinner time I was asked where did the Bride and Groom find me and I told them the site online and the gentleman said I thought that you came from Radio Station and I was like “Really”, the gentleman was like yes and you should think about that, you would be great at it. Well, I doubted myself until I did two more weddings and someone thought the same thing. So just a coincidence there was an online Radio station that needed a talk show host and approached me and I agreed to it, Well that lasted for only 2 months, because the Radio was not for me because I love the visual aspects of me being in front of the camera. This is when I decided to start my show “The Rico No Suave Talk Show” that I started at the time in Chicago in July 2018.
I am the most proud of the people that have been on the show and then went to tell of people that they should be a guest on my show because of my professionalism. I am proud of the questions that I give my guests to make them think and bring out the best of them. Being a hyped show makes my fans and guests wants to watch more or to come back on the show!
Being in media I have learned a lot about the style of conversations and bringing more out of the guest in a deep conversation that they love to talk about for themselves. What is special about the show I am able to give my guest their flowers of appreciation for what they have done in their life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Number one, Patience I had to learn how to listen and understand the person that I was talking to and then react.
Number two, Being organized, when you say your going to do something do it in a timely fashion, try not to be so busy that you forget about the deadlines you have to make.
Number three, Stay on top of your development and try not to stay on the same level always try to elevate your knowledge in your field, people will recognize you as a great leader and person when they see your knowledge as a brand.
My advice for people that want to get involved in the media and also want to become a talk show host. You must watch your favorite talk show videos and get the concept of the show and make it your own. You always must make a plan of where you want to be in 2 years because technology is different than it was in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Get involved with networking events and ask questions to people that are in the media to get them brainstorm with you on your plan to help you get better. Do this because you love it, not because you don’t have anything else to do and you want to try something just because you think you might like it. This will be a waste of your time and talent, which you will be able to use in a different industry.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did as I was a child is that they both worked to keep a roof over me and brothers and sister’s head and showed me how to be a go getter in the world, they showed me how to respect people of all races and treat them with respect . They also showed me how to respect elders by asying Yes Sir and Yes Maam when listening to them and learn from others. My parents also taught me to learn more about nature and how to travel while fishing. It taught me to have patience but also be attentive in life. Being in the city is good around people but when you connect with nature its a different animal (Not pun intended)
