Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Kramer Throckmorton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Expressing my self-doubt to people close to me, like my husband, has helped me overcome imposter syndrome. He reminds me that when I’m talking about coaching up adaptive athletes, I’m the subject matter expert and people want to learn from me! I also found it helpful to reframe my thoughts. I have to remind myself that I am competent and qualified to work with individuals with long-term physical or traumatic impairments. Be strong and don’t listen to that voice in your head that says you’re not good enough because in fact, YOU ARE!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Emily Kramer Throckmorton, I am the owner and head strength and conditioning coach of Kaizen Athletics and founder/CEO of Kaizen Adaptive Training. I am a Certified Adaptive and Inclusive Trainer with 12+ years of coaching all fitness levels. I specialize in training injured athletes, whether that is acute or long-term. I am extremely passionate about the Adaptive population and I want to continue to make an impact on our community and individuals all over the world. It is an honor to serve our Wounded Warriors, Veterans, First Responders, Law Enforcement Officers and our Adaptive Community! I am also the Adaptive Athlete Director for Soldiers to Sidelines, a nonprofit organization that provides a path for current or former military members to become great coaches. I am also on the board of directors for Team Hoyt Virginia Beach, a nonprofit organization that makes races inclusive for the special needs or physically impaired population. I was recently selected as the 2024 Top Forty Under 40, This prestigious award is bestowed upon individuals under the age of 40, nominated by members of their communities, who have demonstrated leadership, initiative, and dedication and made significant contributions in business and their community.
I am excited to announce that starting February 2025, we will be traveling all over the United Stated with our educational platform! We will be hosting the Kaizen Adaptive Coach Course at different gyms to spread the word on how to coach up the adaptive population. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most impactful qualities that contributed to my success are likely a strong work ethic, a constant drive for learning and adaptation, and the ability to build strong relationships with others. My advice would be to put yourself out there even if there is potential for failure. Make relationships with other business owners- I’ve always found success in helping other businesses grow because they end up wanting to support yours in return!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Make a routine and stick with it. I have a handful of nonnegotiable habits that keep me in check. Everyday I workout with a group of friends at 3:00pm. Even when I have my plate full, I put that on pause to make sure I get my workout in. This ultimately keeps my head on straight and lets me have an outlet from the stress. I also incorporate a sauna and ice bath session daily. This is mostly done mid-day. A great way to down regulate and it makes my body feel great! Find habits that you can consistently do for the rest of your life!
