We recently connected with Marie-eva Volmar and have shared our conversation below.
Marie-Eva, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My strong work ethic stems from a deep desire to break free from generational curses and become a catalyst for change in my family for future generations. I wasn’t born into privilege; I came into this world as an orphan in Haiti, never having known my Haitian parents, whom I was told were deceased. I grew up in an orphanage in Port-au-Prince before being adopted by a family of French Canadians, who also carried their own emotional scars. On top of that, throughout my schooling, I faced significant discrimination and bullying because of my skin color. This made me realize early on that nothing would be handed to me, and I would have to outwork everyone else to achieve success. Working hard is all I really know. At just 11 years old, I took a babysitting class offered by the Red Cross at my school, which is the minimum age to receive a certificate in Canada. I was the youngest student in the class, but I completed it successfully and earned my babysitting certificate. I began babysitting the children of my mother’s colleagues and my cousins, often during after-school hours and on weekends. Those experiences taught me valuable business skills and instilled in me a strong work ethic at a very early age that would benefit me later in life, even if I didn’t realize it at the time.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the founder of Dallada Films Inc, the child company of Dallada Corporation which I created while I was in College/University in 2014.
As a Haitian orphan and adoptee, my journey has been shaped by profound challenges and resilience. I’m proud to announce the release of our upcoming film, Boy Soul Man Heart, which addresses the often-overlooked issue of male sexual abuse.
This film is my debut as a writer, director, and producer. My aim is to break the silence and challenge the stigma around male sexual abuse. The inspiration comes from my own experiences and my role as the oldest sibling to many brothers. I wanted to highlight how sexual abuse impacts men and affects their sense of self.
Boy Soul Man Heart tells the story of Mathias, the only male in a support group for female abuse survivors. He shares his painful experiences of being abused 400 times. The film is designed to raise awareness and provide a platform for male survivors.
At the end of the film, a heartfelt poem explores the societal pressures on men and the importance of allowing boys to express their emotions. I believe that breaking down barriers around expressing feelings could help reduce the high rate of male suicides. Men are significantly more likely to die by suicide than women, despite women being more prone to depression.
Dallada Films is committed to making a difference. Through Boy Soul Man Heart, we aim to advocate for male survivors and raise awareness about this crucial issue.
My journey into filmmaking began with a high school project and grew through creating music videos and documentaries. Establishing Dallada Films was a natural step, allowing me to tell stories that explore identity and belonging. My path from a Haitian orphan to a creative storyteller shows my perseverance and dedication. I hope to inspire others to follow their passions and make a positive impact.
A bit about my background:
I was born on February 5, 1990, in Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, Haiti. After losing my parents early on, I was placed in an orphanage and later adopted by a Canadian couple. I chose to reconnect with my Haitian roots and changed my name back to Marie-Eva Volmar.
Growing up in a challenging environment fueled my drive to make a meaningful impact. Despite facing discrimination and personal struggles, I’m committed to offering hope and resilience, especially to Haitian adoptees facing similar challenges.
If I can bring healing and inspiration through my life, work, both in film and beyond, I believe my life will have purpose and meaning. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to sharing Boy Soul Man Heart with you.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I realize how often I let the opinions of others sway my decisions. If I had trusted myself more and not let external discouragement affect me, I believe I’d be further along in my path today. That said, every challenge I’ve faced has contributed to my growth and strengthened my resolve to succeed. Through it all, I’ve learned that self-trust, resilience, and authenticity are the keys to overcoming obstacles and staying true to your path, even when the journey feels lonely. For those who are embarking on their own paths, my strongest advice is to trust yourself. Don’t let anyone’s doubts or negativity steer you off course. The road may feel lonely at times, but if a dream is meant for you, it’s yours to pursue—and no one else’s. Be cautious of those who try to belittle your ambitions, and always stay true to yourself. Your authenticity will be your guiding light through the toughest moments. The journey may not be easy, but it is always possible. Keep your focus, stay passionate, and remain hungry for the success that’s uniquely yours.
