Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Valeria Lento Palmertree. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Valeria, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Optimism is too often misinterpreted as aloofness or oblivion, but true optimism requires an admirable level of depth. I believe that true optimism is birthed from difficult experiences. When you have gone through darkness, hardship and loss, it becomes evident that challenging chapters only last a while – that there’s always good on the horizon, a silver lining, a sliver of light… Hope and joy always find their way back in.
From a young age, I have always focused on the good, thanks largely in part to my mother, who was an optimist even in the face of incredible difficulty. I owe much of my perspective – and my resilience – to her. Through the years, amid unimaginable loss, grief and challenges, my optimism has kept me rooted and resilient.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
A strategic communicator and public relations consultant, I’m also a lover of stories, style and sunsets.
I can most often be found contemplating, traveling, writing, reading, cooking, dining, listening to live music and taking in the outdoors.
I’m passionate about stories – finding them, reading them, writing them and sharing them. I have cultivated this passion professionally over a 17-year public relations career. Sharing brand’s stories and crafting narratives of far-away places are not only two of my favorite things to do, I consider them an immense privilege. And while the spark for storytelling was ignited long ago, today I have the opportunity to combine my love of communications and writing, and my curiosity, through my own consulting business – The Palm Tree Type – through which I help my clients unearth, craft and share their stories. My portfolio of services includes communications planning and strategy, media relations and editorial development.
In addition to my public relations work, my writing has appeared in a variety of national publications and, most recently, on greeting cards. On my personal blog, I also muse on life, travel and food. I have also served on multiple communications committees and have been a speaker on national panels on the topics of storytelling, media relations and crisis response.
Originally from Buenos Aires and raised in Miami Beach, I’m fluent in Spanish, Malbec and fútbol. I have a B.S. in Public Relations from the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, an M.A. in Strategic Communications from the University of West Florida, and a heart-driven passion for writing, editing and good journalism.
I currently reside in Virginia Beach, Va. with my husband of 12 years, our one-year-old daughter and our 10-year-old golden retriever.
Always the optimist, I believe that connecting with and learning from one another is the surest way to break down barriers and spread some joy.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Authenticity. “Staying true to yourself” can sound cliché, but I have found it to be essential in carving your own path. You are the only person who can be you, who can provide your distinct perspective and share your unique story.
Collaboration. Some of my best work has been a result of collaborating with others, Surrounding yourself with diverse viewpoints and ideas is key to expanding your mind and exploring different approaches.
Curiosity. Never stop asking questions or digging in deeper. Remaining curious feeds our minds and can lead to some magical discoveries.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I am most inspired by clients that aren’t just good, but are doing good. I am drawn to clients who have a compelling story to share – and I love the challenge of unearthing a client’s story and helping them articulate it. For the past 17 years, I have primarily worked with experiences and products within the lifestyle space, but I am always open to others in search of a storyteller with whom to partner.
