Meet Judy Morgan

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Judy Morgan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi JUDY, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from my family. Both sets of grandparents came from very humble beginnings. One grandfather dropped out of school before junior high to work to put food on his family’s table. He was an entrepreneur who didn’t believe in banks, saving his money in tobacco cans buried in his basement. He bought, refurbished, and sold many vegetable and dairy farms, then moved on to owning a general store and then a furniture store. My other grandfather worked hard to put himself through college, eventually becoming a county school superintendent. Both my parents worked hard to make things better for the next generation. My father, even without a college education, worked his way up to national sales manager for a hardware company. He put my mother, sister, and me through college; my mother had a long career as a school teacher and reading specialist. Eventually, my parents started their own business that took them through their retirement years. Because my parents had given so much to me, I worked to put myself through veterinary school, not wanting them to take on the burden of debt. I am also a serial entrepreneur and that trait has been handed down to my children who also have robust work ethics.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am the owner and CEO of Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets. At Naturally Healthy Pets we educate and empower pet owners to transform their pets’ lives for improved health and longevity. We have over 600 natural pet products available on our e-commerce platform, all of which have been vetted and approved by me. We also have DrJudyU, which is an educational site that provides coursework for pet parents and pet professionals. The courses are presented by top experts in the field of natural pet health. We have hosted many in-person speaking events over the years. Our biggest event ever will be the International Naturally Healthy Pets Experience by Allprovide in Orlando, Florida, on May 13th and 14th, 2025, where we will feature eight highly recognized and respected professionals speaking on natural pet health, along with the Natural Pet Market with over fifty hand-selected vendors.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I’m afraid of failure. While that can be daunting and hold me back from taking risks, it also assures me that I will do whatever is needed to succeed. At one time I was facing bankruptcy in my veterinary practice. I was so afraid of letting down my staff and clients that I risked spending $35,000 (on a credit card!) to hire business consultants. They provided consulting, but it took a lot of hard work to turn things around. With their help, I made the practice profitable in only two months. In college, I learned about science and veterinary medicine, but there was no instruction on how to run a business. Hiring the right professionals – legal, accounting, consulting – is critical to having a successful business. Naturally Healthy Pets was started while I was still running two veterinary practices. Having income from the practices allowed me to work on the new start-up without taking a salary. I never expected this project to become a big company; it was more of a hobby sideline. For those who want to have a successful business, it must be more than a hobby. It takes focus and teamwork. My daughter became COO in January 2020, turning my hobby into a thriving business. Over fifty percent of small businesses fail. Success means working on something for which you are passionate. Starting a business because it looks like a quick money-maker rarely leads to true success unless you care about what you are doing and the people you are serving.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Our biggest challenge right now is our rapid growth. I know that sounds like a good problem to have! We started in our two-car garage, moved to a 1200-square-foot warehouse for two years, then a 7,000-square-foot warehouse, to now searching for 12,000 to 15,000 square feet of space. Our team has grown from no employees except my husband and me, to sixteen and growing. This has all been organic growth, paying our way as we go without borrowing money. We have been fortunate to find incredible team members, but that is not always easy.
