We recently connected with Kevin Edilson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my belief in myself and the belief that one day I will achieve what I set out to do. The source of my resilience comes solely from the image I see of myself every time I close my eyes and see myself in the future.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I do a mixture of 3 things, and these include Composing music for Films, TV Shows, Games, and Commercials. I also Produce Music for myself and other artists, I play the guitar and piano, and I am an overall musician. I believe that the most exciting part about what I do, is the fact that my work has no barriers and I can tackle and take on any task. These skills allow me to work in Films, Commercials, Games, Music and really any venture I desire. And this year because of that I was able to land opportunities in short films that are currently in production, one of which is a western short by the name of “Forever West” where I scored a mix between traditional orchestral western score with a touch of electric and acoustic guitars. This is my best work so far. I am also about to release my first music video very soon as well, that has a cinematic aspect and feel to it. I am also taking on production jobs to produce two artists first projects. So this is why I believe my work to be exciting, and it’s mainly due to it’s variety.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three most important qualities or skills that I have learnt so far, that really took my work to the next level, is Number 1 the ability to listen to what’s around me and incorporate every single thing my ear likes into the music. This is what created my sound in the process. Number 2 the ability to forget, and what I mean by this is me trying many things, failing and forgetting about it so I keep myself going, and I don’t carry that failure on my shoulder. Number 3 having the ability to never quit. Because you never lose when you never quit. I might not be the best at something right now, but if I never give up on it, I will achieve greatness through that, because only success is left after failure.
The advice I would give someone at an early stage in their career is to never quit, and learn to forget. I think these two traits still carry me through situations today, and they are really powerful mentalities.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most. impactful thing my parents did for me was to let me take a shot at my dreams, and helping me come to the US to pursue them. I come from a country called Mozambique, and wanting to follow an artistic path isn’t in the forefront of most of the people there. For the longest time my parents negated this dream of mine, but eventually and thankfully because I didn’t give up, they allowed me to do it, and now they believe in my vision and they are more supportive than ever. I wouldn’t be in the position that I am in right now if it weren’t for them. So they are a pivotal point of the beginning of my success.
