Meet Tina Butler

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tina Butler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tina, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose after having my daughter. One month after having my daughter, I separated from my husband of 5 years. I moved to a different state with my daughter to live with my sister. It was a huge change and I suffered really bad from postpartum hair loss. I was devastated. I tried many products, but nothing was quit doing the job so I decided to make my very own natural hair products. I wanted something natural for me and my daughter. She helped me find my purpose. Now people all over have experienced products from my brand, X M Beauty.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Tina Butler, and I have a small business called X M Beauty. X M Beauty, is named after my beautiful daughter, Xena Marianne.
I started X M Beauty, just 4 months postpartum. When my daughter was one month I went through a devastating seperation and ended up leaving with Xena to go Live with my sister in a different state. Postpartum is already very hard, but adding on heartbreak and postpartum hair loss left me devastated. I began making natural concoctions up in my kitchen, trying to find a solution for my hair loss. After trial and error I had made a hair growth oil that actually worked for my hair! After making that I started formulating our now best selling leave-in conditioner. This product took me many many months, but I finally came up with the perfect formula. I was using the products and let friends and family use the products as well. They fell in love and I decided to take it a step further and start my business. This was back in 2021 when I received my first stimulus check. I took that money and invested in my business and almost 4 years later X M Beauty is still standing. After about a year in business, I wanted a hobby. My sister had an old sewing machine in the attic and I asked to borrow it. I didn’t know how to sew, but thought I would give it a try. It became like therapy to me. I would throw on a podcast and sew for hours, until I got really good!! Then I just incorporated my items in with my hair care products! We care about quality over here! Every product is made to perfection by me mainly, with the help of family here and there. We have tons of things going on. We sell online and mainly in person markets/fairs. We just did one of the largest fairs in the area, which was the Delaware state fair. A 10 day fair that was 12 hours long each day! We have many more upcoming fairs/ events that we are so excited about!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities that I have that impact my journey are: honesty, commitment, and determination.

#1 honesty. People trust my brand. If we say we will do something we do it. We communicate with our customers about what goes on behind the scenes and in front. Trust is everything in business.

#2 commitment. Lots of people start something and then quit. It’s no walk in the park to start and RUN and business, but if this is your purpose and you have a goal it will make you committed.

#3 Determination. I’m a single mom. I want my child to grow up with everything she needs. I am determined to see this through to the very end.

My advice is to start something that you are truly passionate about. What comes easily to you? That’s what you should be doing. If it’s hard and unnatural, do not waste your time, even if others are doing it.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My biggest area of growth over the past 12 months was doing it scared.

I have passed up on so many opportunities because I was scared or anxious. Now, if I want to do something, I do it. I have social anxiety, but not many people will know because I put myself out there. I talk to people all the time, but it’s something I suffer with. But I do it anyhow.
