Meet Megan Zina

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Zina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Megan, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from this fire inside of me that will never burn out. I’ve always known that I wanted to do something in fashion- as I grew as an artist my vision for my career and life became more clear- it’s the knowing what I want that gives me resilience- along with my drive and support system.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a Fashion Stylist & Costumer based in Los Angeles. I’ve been in the fashion industry for 10 years- started in PR, wholesale, then landed in styling and I love it here. I’ll stay 🙂

It’s important for me, as an artist, to help my clients feel as seen and as beautiful as they are. While I’m creating a look, I know it’s the one by a feeling I get. It’s a love story between the clothes and I. Coca Michelle refers to herself and other artists as “Visual Poets,” I really love that and couldn’t agree more. I want my looks to create the same feeling that you get while reading Rupi Kaur and other great poets.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The most important skills/qualities to have to get into styling is: passion, drive & creativity. You have to love it, want it and be interested it. Secondly, you need to be a people person. You are around people in usually intimate settings where they can be vulnerable or just a lot of different people and personalities on set. You need to be likable. I wake up early and always make sure that I have a quiet morning. It starts with: gratitude, affirmations, lemon water, meditation and a workout. I learned that I need a quiet morning for myself and for others. A quiet morning makes me feel better which means I’m going to be more likable or in a better mood for others- which is very important in an industry where you mainly get work by word of mouth. Communication and flexibility are also huge. You are constantly in contact with: brands, clients, assistants, managers, etc. Things also shift often, you have to be okay with the constant change. Relationships are so important with this job, treat people well & care about others. I know it’s a common phrase but it’s so true, “People don’t always remember what you did but they will always remember how you made them feel.”

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed- I make a list. I love a good list- nothing beats the feeling of checking everything off. I would say if you feel overwhelmed about a specific project, just starting is huge and taking one step at a time always helps me. I personally am old school and always print out my mood boards. I like to write my notes on the actual mood board as I’m prepping for my projects. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and just need to shift and focus on something else for a bit- I would suggest the Fryman hike, a fluffy Australian Shepherd/Husky dog mix to hike with, and a good fashion podcast to listen to while hiking, I personally love the Who What Wear podcast with Hillary Kerr. I’m determined to be on it one day.
