We were lucky to catch up with Dustin T. Pagliughi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dustin T., we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I’d have to say that my generosity comes mostly from my mother. Being a natural giver, she always made sure everyone around her had something to help get by. When I was young, we practiced the “hand me down” method throughout our family meaning, if my sister, or I out grew something, we would then repurpose that article to our cousins and so on and so forth. We were taught to share at a very young age.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an innovative storyteller and content strategist for the broadcast & digital market. Basically, a partner or client comes to us with an idea for a project or campaign and we go out and find user-generated content, found content and/or situational moments that fit their creative brief. It’s really exciting because we get to go out and sift through 1,000’s of pieces of content to find that gem that is going to be made into a commercial! Besides running the business on the day-to-day, I also have a hand in working on every project that comes across my desk. I have the role of Art Director or Creative Director from our side to make sure that the content we’re digging up fits each brief for our partners. I absolutely LOVE my job!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities, skills or area that were most impactful in my journey would have to be resilience, empathy and generosity.
I would tell anyone who is early in their journey that it will take failures to succeed. Also, try to put yourself in others shoes. Everyone is walking a different path in life so it’s important to not be judgmental and have empathy for others. And last but certainly not least, give others a chance. If given an opportunity to shine, they may surprise you.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
A book that has a significant impact on me is “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. First, I love Simon because he’s an optimist and always looking for the positive in any negative. This book puts forth the notion of starting with your purpose, or your “why” before the “what” and the “how”. This reinforces passion for me. Every career will have its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, you have to be passionate about what you do so that you can navigate those downs.
A couple of nuggets from the book were about taking risks and trusting your gut. Two things that are underrated. Most times, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward and, always, always trust yourself in making hard decisions whether it be turning down work that doesn’t align with your morals, or giving someone with very little experience a chance to try.
