Meet Smile Soul Frangelly Teresa Petti Carrero

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Smile Soul Frangelly Teresa Petti Carrero. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Smile Soul , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Thank you Bold Journey Magazine for this huge opportunity of sharing my story, I am Smile Soul a singer-songwritter from Venezuela.

I consider that “Finding our purpose” is a subject of much introspection, we are all different and we all have different processes, each one manages at his own pace guided by his own desire and instinct in that search.

Speaking from a personal point of view, it took me years to understand that my path was in music.

It was not easy to change careers three times, but the unconditional support of my parents was fundamental. I come from a home where most of them are music lovers, I keep memories as a child singing with my dad, going with my mom to take my sister to her violin lessons, or listening to my grandfather singing opera, I remember being surrounded by art in general, so ironically how did I last so long in that search? sometimes we cling to things or make decisions based on what “we think will be better for the future” and we neglect the value of feeling fulfilled with what we do.

I accepted that as long as I enjoy what I do and feel good about myself, I’m on the right path. I really love singing; my songs are my experiences and noticing how people have come to identify with what I express through them, simply fills me up.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Frangelly Teresa Petti Carrero I was born in Maracay Venezuela, I took the name “Smile” when I was doing graffiti around my city and when I started to dedicate myself to music I added the “soul” because of its meaning or at least what it means to me. In 2019 I released my first single called “Par de Birras” a mix of Neo-Soul, R&B and Jazz. However I started in the world of music when I was 12 years old formally studying theory and solfeggio at the conservatory, some academic piano lessons and Venezuelan cuatro. Although my stay at the conservatory was brief, music has always accompanied me.

After a long absence where I focused on finishing my studies at a higher level and recovering my spirits after the pandemic, a song was born that talks about how to face these constant struggles named “de mi pa’ mi” (2022) a hymn of healing “it is like a prayer that I wrote during the pandemic to cope with the struggle with myself and my surroundings”.

Since that release I had the opportunity to tour several stages of my hometown and nearby towns and cities, be opening for artists of the national hip hop movement, be part in the tour of the Mega (national radio station) program “En Aleatorio Deluxe” and in February 2024 I won first place in the festival of urban music (FMU) event held in Caracas Venezuela organized by Amnesty International, El Festival Nuevas Bandas, and Cusica.
Recently (2024) my first studio album “Guayabo” was released, based on a personal catharsis where the songs included narrate in chronological order the stages of a heartbreak. Five tracks experimenting from contemporary R&B/Soul, salsa, swing jazz and the classic bass drum and snare. An album Mastered and mixed in Dolby Atmos with a lot of effort and dedication consolidating my sound, “my soul”.

Making this album taught me many lessons, many beautiful and bitter moments, it allowed me to grow and dream of the impossible making it possible as I once imagined it.

Next presentation date: December 7th 2024 Cusica Fest Festival, Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) Caracas, Venezuela.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

• Discipline: You can be very talented but if you have no focus or commitment to yourself and what you do you will be playing against yourself.

• Don’t compare yourself: I think there is nothing more toxic than comparing yourself, you have to evaluate your progress at your own pace.

• Believing in yourself: is essential because it’s the foundation of your confidence, motivation, and resilience. It’s what empowers you to take risks, learn from failures, and keep moving forward despite obstacles.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I like to remember where I come from, in the sense of looking at all that we have moved forward, traveled, overcomed and simply have a minute to take a breath before moving on. Because I feel that there is no time to waste.
