Meet Broken Wires

We recently connected with Broken Wires and have shared our conversation below.

Broken Wires, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Creativity strikes in the least expected places and when that happens, you just have to run with it, no matter where you are and what you’re doing. It could be in the middle of a forest, on a long car journey or watching a film or a show. There have been times when we’ve had to get out of bed to write down an idea, or we’ve been unable to sleep because of a concept spinning in our heads.

We like to look at other people’s stories and write songs from their perspective to give other voices a platform. Examples of this include a war hero who sacrificed himself in a concentration camp, an undercover FBI agent valued more by the mafia than his bosses and a homeless man looking for love.

These ideas have led to our debut album Author of Your World, which we released in October 2024 to critical acclaim in the press, charting in Record Weekly’s top 10 alongside The Cure, and streaming more than 3,500 times all over the world on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube and many more in the first 30 days alone.

Creativity also comes from experiential endeavours, such as watching films, travelling, going to gigs, being out in nature and listening to other musicians’ work.

We find that if you try to force creativity, it doesn’t flow and tends to create periods of dry writing, or writer’s block or it changes into something else entirely. If you let it come organically, the creativity becomes more frequent and the dry spells are shorter. As a result, you end up with overall better songs.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

We are Broken Wires, an award-winning young rock band from Worcestershire, England, that has performed across the UK, Germany and the United States.

Our debut album Author of Your World was released in October 2024 at a packed launch party to critical acclaim in multiple magazines, newspapers and radio shows, charting in Record Weekly’s Top 10 alongside The Cure and Maggie Rogers.

The album has been featured in full-page spreads in the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post, the front of the Sunday Mercury’s Weekend magazine, BirminghamLive, SLAP mag and Canvas Rebel, which is based in California. We’ve also been featured on the BBC and Black Country Radio.

This follows an exciting few years, starting with fundraising gigs for Punk4TheHomeless during Covid, a 50+ gig line-up in 2023, 10 festivals in summer 2024 across the UK and Europe and a string of acoustic performances in Los Angeles, Memphis, New Orleans and Nashville, including at the legendary Bluebird Cafe.

We are singer-songwriter Henry Fradgley, 15, on vocals and rhythm guitar; lead guitarist Frankie Fradgley, 17; bassist Emma Powell, 19 and drummer George Swift, 17.

Author of Your World has been streamed more than 3,500 times across the globe in the first four weeks, including in Japan, South Korea, Germany, USA and Australia. We have also released a single called The Merchant and an official music video for our headline track Coffee Rock.

Our mission is to keep rock music and venues alive, encouraging more people to embrace the joy of making and sharing music.

Author of Your World is available to stream and download across all platforms, including Spotify, Apple, YouTube and Amazon Music.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

If you enjoy something and it’s your dream, chase it at every opportunity you possibly can.

Practice, practice, practice! But make sure it’s effective practice, not just practicing for the sake of it.

Step outside your comfort zone – the more you do it, the more comfortable it will become.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

We’d love to collaborate with other like-minded people as we feel connecting with other’s experiences can lead to truly beautiful and evocative songs.
When we were last in the States, we played at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville where we connected with artists from all over the world. As a result, we have stayed in touch with these musicians and love the way in which we can support and inspire each other on our musical journeys.

Equally, we love to collaborate with others when performing as sharing the stage with other musicians is a great way to raise each other’s profiles and leads to interesting future projects. We collaborated with a saxophonist on our recently released debut album Author of Your World and this really added an extra dimension.

We’d be thrilled to connect with other bands, songwriters, photographers, videographers, authors and artists from anywhere across the world. Please DM us on Instagram (find us @BrokenWiresBand) or email us at [email protected]
