We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Munro Farrugia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My father was probably the hardest working person I have ever met. He always instilled in my sister and I that you can achieve anything so long as you work hard for it. He gave us every opportunity to reach whatever goals we had for ourselves. I’ll always be grateful for that.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a personal injury trial attorney. Realistically everyone is aware of what a personal injury attorney is, but what I do is a little more than most because I take cases to trial in the event a client is not offered enough money in litigation. I have a small practice with clients who are severely injured or have had a loved one pass away due to someone else’s negligence.
I started my firm in July 2024 because I saw aspects of my profession that I didn’t like. Clients were lost and considered just another case when they were going through a horrific change in their life. I think it’s important to emulate or be the change you want to see, so I decided to open my practice and focus on providing the best service I can to my clients while also being as aggressive as possible with the insurance companies and defense lawyers. I’m passionate about what I do and I think it shows in my work.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Courage, dedication and a proper work life balance have all helped me get to this place in my career.
Being courageous enough to walk into a situation in which you’re unfamiliar, hold your head high and handle it to the best of your ability is going to set you apart from other people. Even if you’re scared, pretending you have it all figured out can help too. A fake it until you make it approach is very helpful in my profession. Know what you need to know and trust that you can apply it. It sounds so corny but truly believing you can is going to make all the difference.
Dedication to your craft is also vital. We all know someone who doesn’t put in the time or effort and it shows in their work product. Give yourself the grace to make mistakes but don’t let those mistakes be a result of laziness. You’re better than that and the people you work for/with deserve more than that.
Finally, I really think growing to a point where I find a proper work life balance is key. For years, I focused too much on the dedication aspect and forgot that I was a human being that wanted a family and a life. I learned the word no and limited my time spent working beyond 5 or 6pm. Of course, there’s always times when you need to grind, but it really shouldn’t be everyday.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was help me pay for my education. Law school was expensive and if they did not help pay off my student loans, I would not have been able to move from Florida to California. I can easily say my life would not be even close to as fulfilling if I was still living there. I’m grateful for their support in the regard.
