We were lucky to catch up with Soulfiya recently and have shared our conversation below.
Soulfiya, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve never had the luxury of having a large support system or a close-nit community. I’ve always been an exceptional individual, in the sense that i’m visibly different than my peers. Because of that, or maybe in spite of it, I look to make music that I would have wanted as a youth coming up. Representation matters, and it makes me proud to be that representative for someone out there

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
On October 24th I released a new EP Faawaad, a fusion of reggae, drum and bass, UK digital vibes, soca, and dancehall featuring top-tier production from Grammy-nominated El Dusty. The four-track EP promises to grab listeners with its energy, rhythm, and genre-blending creativity.
Opening the EP is the title track, Faawaad, a high-energy drum and bass riddim with a classic feel. Created by producers El Dusty and Dred Nugent, this track sets the tone with rapid-fire, top-shelf lyrics, perfectly paired with the smooth Neo-soul vocals of Kroywen. This exciting anthem captures the essence of modern Caribbean/American rhythms and style.
The EP’s second track dives deep into the UK digital sound, with a thunderous riddim once again crafted by El Dusty and Dred Nugent. BossFiya is a ganja anthem that features one of Guyana’s favorite artists, Gucci Boss—a soca/dancehall powerhouse hailing from New York by way of Berbice, Guyana. The track’s big bass and infectious groove make it the ultimate vibe for reggae and dancehall lovers.
21 Gun Salute is a tribute track, where I shout out and pay homage to my favorite foundation dancehall artists and the influences that shaped my sound. El Dusty puts a fresh spin on Jackie Mittoo’s classic “Drum Song” riddim, giving the track a nostalgic 90’s dancehall/dembow flavor while maintaining a contemporary edge. It’s both a roll call and a nod to reggae’s rich legacy.
Closing out the EP is 1, 2, 3!, another collaboration with Gucci Boss. Produced by El Dusty, this soca-meets-dancehall banger combines Indo-Caribbean drums, heavy club bass, and soca elements to create an infectious fusion track. Perfect for the dance floor, 1, 2, 3! is sure to ignite any party. To complement the tune a fun, high-energy music video has been released through internationally renowned reggae outlet Reggaeville showcasing the vibrant spirit of this cultural crossover. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Ive always know what I wanted, maybe not how to get there but my vision has always been clear at least to me. Also decisiveness, the ability to act fast helps a lot in this game. Finally having a collaborative spirit, when egos can be put aside some of the greatest things can be achieved.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collab with a clothing company or designer. I’ve always felt like my musical style lends itself to that type of visual representation. LinkMeh @Soulfiya on IG, or send me an email at [email protected]
