Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Maxey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I feel like imposter syndrome is something that most entrepreneurs experience, especially at the beginning of their journey. I would be lying if I said I don’t still struggle with imposter syndrome from time to time. I don’t know if the feeling of thinking I’m just “faking it till I make it” will ever wear off. But once I realized that most business owners (and most adults in general) are all just basically “faking it till they make it”, I felt more comfortable and confident. Because the reality is, that most of us don’t know what we are doing and just taking it one step at a time. Stepping out of your comfort zone will be UNCOMFORTABLE, but that doesn’t mean you are not capable. Growth is scary because it’s new – I am constantly reminding myself of that.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder of Slate Social Management – A social media management and digital marketing brand. Slate helps Denver local & non-local businesses grow their brand online through strategic content creation & digital marketing. Since creating Slate in 2023, I have helped a handful of brands grow their business & their online community. Being able to help other business owners achieve their dreams through achieving mine is such a special gift. I love being able to connect with other business owners, learn the ins and outs of their mission, and be able to ease stress off of their shoulders by taking over their marketing & socials so they can focus on what they do best – running their biz.
I will be expanding Slate and hiring a team in 2025 as Slate’s need for more capacity grows and more brands are wanting to work with Slate. I’m so excited for this next chapter of Slate and see what 2025 has in store!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my background in content creation, my determination, and my ability to connect with people all pointed to owning a business, especially in this niche. I’ve always loved creating content in any capacity. I asked for a camera for Christmas in elementary school and immediately fell in love with capturing moments & taking videos. In middle school, I was obsessed with making videos on my iPad and editing them into either movie trailers, music videos, or “short films”. This passion led me to start modeling when I was 17 and I’m still modeling in Denver to this day. I believe my passion and experience behind and in front of the camera helps me with capturing content for businesses! Along with that, my determination to achieve whatever I set my mind to in life was a crucial sign that I would end up owning a business. When you are an entrepreneur, you need to be able to persevere through hard times and through any doubt & fear. The instability of only relying on yourself and not knowing what is in store can be scary. So having strong determination to not give up when times are rough is a huge factor in starting a business. The same goes for being able to connect with people. I’ve always been a huge empath and had the ability to make a friend everywhere and anywhere I go. I think this is a positive personality trait that a business owner needs. Being able to have a conversation with anyone, make friends, and connect with anyone is so important in entrepreneurship!
If you are in the early stages of starting a business, in the SMM niche or not, my advice would be to just keep going. Push through the hard stuff. I always remind myself of this quote – “Anything worth having is worth working for”
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Currently, I am in the phase of prepping to bring on a team. I have found the most perfect team members to bring on, but I had no idea how much of a challenge it would be to get to the point of hiring. I always knew that if I was going to have a team, I was going to be the best possible boss that I could be. I am planning on bringing the girls on in Jan. 2025, so I have been working endlessly to get prepared and all my ducks in a row to have an organized and successful onboarding process for them. As a business owner, you are always learning and growing and this is 100% a time where I am learning so much about being a business owner and now a boss. Even though this phase of entrepreneurship is challenging and requires even more of a workload than what I had previously, it is going to be so worth it and I am so excited for what’s in store for 2025 and Slate’s future.
