We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jsal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
JSAL, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My journey into music began as a way to cope during one of the most challenging periods of my life—facing cancer treatment. At a time when words alone felt inadequate, I found solace and expression in music. Songwriting started as a therapeutic outlet, a way to process fear, hope, and the intensity of that experience. Over time, music became more than therapy; it grew into a calling and a way to connect with others on their journeys.
My resilience, the foundation of both my life and my music, comes from that battle with cancer and the strength it demanded. Facing something that shakes you to your core redefines what “strength” really means, and it taught me to find power in vulnerability. I also draw resilience from my community—the unwavering support of loved ones and the connection with listeners who share their stories with me. This resilience fuels my work, and each song is a testament to that journey, especially tracks like “Be Invincible” and “Inner Flame,” which embody hope and the will to overcome.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a music artist, performer, and storyteller deeply rooted in resilience, empowerment, and authenticity. Surviving cancer became the spark for my creative journey, where music transformed from a therapeutic outlet into a purpose-driven career. Before my diagnosis, music was just a hobby, something I enjoyed but never fully embraced. It was only after my diagnosis that everything changed. Struggling to cope with the emotional and physical challenges, I turned to journaling as a way to process my thoughts. Writing became my release, and through this practice, I began to discover the power of words and their ability to heal.
As I poured my feelings onto the page, I started to see the potential for these personal reflections to become music. My debut single, Be Invincible, was born from these journaling sessions. The lyrics reflect the raw vulnerability and strength I found during my journey, capturing the essence of resilience and hope. What started as a means of coping turned into a way to connect with others who might be facing their own battles.
Alongside music, my journey has led me to develop a new interest in healthy living. The focus on wellness—both physical and mental—has become an essential part of my life. I’ve embraced a more balanced lifestyle, exploring nutrition, fitness, and mindfulness to support my ongoing healing and well-being. This newfound passion is reflected in my music, as I strive to promote a holistic approach to health that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit.
Creating uplifting anthems like Be Invincible and Inner Flame is a highlight of my work, as they resonate with listeners navigating their own struggles. These songs, shaped by my highs and lows, are a way to connect and uplift others through powerful lyrics and unforgettable energy.
In 2025, I’ll be sharing more of this journey with new releases and live performances where audiences can experience the passion of resilience firsthand. I’m thrilled to partner with organizations like Wellspring Cancer Support, aligning with causes close to my heart.
My upcoming album, Rising Phoenix, will feature even more of this story. It’s a reflection of my evolution and strength, with tracks like Purple Illusion, Fractured Mirrors, and I’m Enough, which dive deep into themes of self-discovery, overcoming adversity, and embracing authenticity.
Beyond music, I’m committed to engaging my audience across platforms with behind-the-scenes moments and interactive content that bring them into my journey—both musically and in my pursuit of a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. This isn’t just music—it’s a movement, a reminder that no matter what life throws at us, we have the power to rise, keep going, and live well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey are:
1. Resilience and Emotional Strength – Surviving cancer was a transformative experience that taught me the importance of resilience, not just physically but emotionally and mentally. This resilience helped me push through difficult times, tap into my creative side, and stay focused on my goals. For anyone starting their own journey, I’d advise working on building emotional resilience early on. Practice mindfulness, journaling, or any method that helps you process emotions and stay grounded during challenging times.
2. Self-Expression through Music – Music became my voice when words felt inadequate, especially during my cancer battle. It became my way to cope, heal, and eventually connect with others. For anyone starting in music or any form of artistic expression, don’t be afraid to let your unique voice and story come through in your work. The more authentic you are, the more you’ll resonate with people. Experiment, write freely, and use music as a tool for personal expression, even if it’s just for yourself at first.
3. Continuous Learning and Adaptability – From songwriting to performing and developing a healthy lifestyle, my journey has been one of constant learning. The music industry, wellness, and even personal growth require ongoing adaptation and the willingness to evolve. For those starting out, I recommend cultivating a mindset of curiosity. Be open to learning new things, seek feedback, and never stop improving your craft. Whether it’s taking a course, working with mentors, or just experimenting, make learning a lifelong commitment.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to stay patient and compassionate with yourself. It takes time to develop these qualities and skills, but consistently working on them—especially in the face of challenges—will set you on a path to growth. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you, stay true to your purpose, and never underestimate the power of resilience, creativity, and continual learning.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
A particular challenge I’m currently facing is finding balance. As I juggle the demands of music, my personal health journey, and professional commitments, it can be overwhelming to ensure that each aspect of my life receives the attention it deserves. While my music career continues to evolve and I strive to connect with my audience, I also want to maintain my focus on living a healthy lifestyle, staying grounded, and nurturing my personal relationships.
To overcome this, I’m learning to set clear boundaries and prioritize what truly matters in the moment. Time management, planning, and learning to say no when necessary have become essential skills for me. Balancing all of these aspects of my life while continuing to push forward in my music career is a challenge, but it’s one I’m determined to face with intention and patience.
