We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kari Yarbrough. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kari below.
Kari, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
From a very young age my parents instilled in me the importance of having a good work ethic with attention to detail. Whether it meant working hard on my academics or putting all my efforts into whatever job or project I was working on. The emphasis that my parents put on working hard and teaching me how to be capable to face any task or situation that comes my way has greatly contributed to my company KEY’S Southern Spice®.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
While my passion and past time is in the culinary arts, I am studying to become a registered nurse. My other hobbies are outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing with family and friends. My family and my beliefs are strong when it comes to God, family and the USA. I enjoy giving back and serving others through my company for example raising hunger awareness through sponsoring Culinary Fight Club which raises hunger awareness through culinary competitions put on by Fight2Feed which is a not for profit that works with restaurants in local areas to focus on donating foods and raising money to feed those battling hunger in their communities. I also participate in the local events at Bill E’s restaurant located in Fairhope, Alabama known as Bike Night where on the 1st Wednesday of every month there is a push to raise money for local charities as well. This has been a very successful event that we are proud to be a part of as well. For instance we have raised money for Toys for Tots, Kidz Eatz, and many more. Currently the seasoning known as KEY’S Southern Spice(R) started out as a BBQ rub and has quickly become an all purpose seasoning used on proteins including vegetables. It is all natural, has no preservatives, is gluten free and has zero MSG. As an aspiring nursing student this is very important and I am proud to put such a pure product out to the market. I currently have been testing other products to come to the market in which the pandemic seemed to delay due to bottling materials and supplies. I hope to have those out soon. I have registered my trademarks as well in both KEY’S Southern Spice and Unlock the flavor with KEY’S.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I feel it was most helpful to just be open minded when thinking of flavors and how those profiles would come together. It also made it easier to try different foods that I wasn’t really a fan of or wanted to try. KEY’S is really good on bacon, that is one that really got me to enjoy eating bacon at first. Always keep a journal or write down exactly what you do so you can repeat it if it is successful or tweak your process. Always be thankful and know that not everyone will like your product but can respect your work and story. Plus it is a road map to repeat your success if you produce something you would like to be able to go back and produce again.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I would have to say God and the Bible in which the Cross and John 1:1-5 is in the logo and my label. Everything is possible through Him and with His guidance. We all will face challenging times and it is best to trust in Him and that His will be done. 3 Circle Church and the friendships my family has made through the Church have also helped whether it is opening doors through introductions or just the encouragement of fellow Christians. In saying that it also is beneficial to become more disciplined a creating good habits. Reading the Word everyday and prayer life. This all comes together in our daily lives and helps us deal with both the ups and downs. Discipline to follow a plan is a lot like following a recipe. There is an order and steps to be taken.
