Meet Julie Drake

We recently connected with Julie Drake and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

It comes from my childhood. I grew up in a single parent/dysfunctional family and my mother struggled with a lot of issues. She wasn’t able to be there in any meaningful capacity so as a child I had no one to rely on, but myself. I learned from an early age that the person that’ll look out the most for you, is YOU. Not having a parental figure to help me figure things out and get things done created and molded me into a highly disciplined, self motivated woman

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m living the life long dream of being a stand up comedian! As a child I knew I wanted to do comedy, but life got in the way. I became a teenage mother and shelved the dream so I could be there as a parent. It’s exciting to live this dream, because I thought it was dead and the time had longed passed for me to pursue it. I love being able to show women we can live lives as mothers and it’s okay to indulge in our own dreams and desires. As women we tend to focus on others while ignoring ourselves. I’ve had countless women tell me after shows how I’ve inspired them to pursue interests that they themselves have thought to be long gone.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think resilience is helpful in comedy. As a young single mom I was faced with innumerable and varied setbacks but it taught me to stay the course and not give up. Where one path is closed, there are other paths to get you what you want or need . Hollywood sometimes gives glamorous portrayals of pursuing your dreams, but the reality is filled with setbacks and disappointments as well as achievements and successes. It’s a long road but don’t give up. You never know what could be in store for you!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I “check out” lol and by that I mean I’ll usually unplug and spend a day getting reconnected to myself. That could include yoga, meditation and or spending time walking in nature. This is usually what will reset me & im able to go back and tackle all the things I need to do.
