We recently connected with Jack Dunker and have shared our conversation below.
Jack, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Writing songs is my passion, and making music is what drives me. I found my purpose in a guitar. I have played for almost all my life, but it was only three years ago that songwriting called me. As I began writing after years of being around music, my world lit up. To make something new and original is the greatest privilege in this life. I love creating something that influences people. My goal in this life is to write music that will not only be heard by the world but music that will influence the world. This is my purpose and I am so glad I found it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have recently put out a solo EP release with four acoustic songs. I am so proud to share this with the world and encourage readers to go check it out. I am also working on recording a full-length album with my band in a fully professionally produced fashion. I am excited to put that release out as soon as possible. I play gigs around Kansas City and the Midwest almost every weekend so if you’re in the area come check out the live shows! The best way to stay up to date on those shows is by following my Instagram.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As much as I would like to say musical skills are the most important aspects of my journey that would not be true. Communication and persistence in communication are so important to me. When looking for gigs or musical opportunities you have to be persistent in your contact with promoters and venue owners. There are hundreds of bands fighting for those same shows and you have to distinguish yourself. The last skill I credit my progress so far to is relationship building. There is no price that can be put on a positive relationship. You can’t reach your goals on your own, you need help, and building relationships is how you find the people who will help you reach those goals you strive for.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents taught me everything about hard work, especially my Dad. I can remember so many emails to promoters and venues that he edited and showed me how to effectively communicate in a business setting. He has been at almost every live show and I work to make him proud every day. Watching my Dad go about everyday tasks with true attention to detail is inspiring. He has always taught me that nothing is worth doing halfway and you must devote everything you have to something if you want it. Making him proud and showing him how hard I work to achieve my goals in music is truly something that drives me.
