Meet Kim Phan

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Phan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.

Kim, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence did not come from day one. The only thing I had from the get go was a vision of where I wanted to be. Being a permanent makeup artist requires a lot of practice. And through repetition, drawing the same eyebrows over and over on faux skin, did my confidence grow. Seeing even the tiniest of improvements gave me the motivation to push through. And now I am confident enough where I can almost do this with my eyes closed, but don’t worry, I won’t..

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been in the permanent makeup field for over 8 years doing eyebrows, eyeliner and lips. My passion is the same today as it was when I started. I love enhancing the beauty of all my clients. This industry is always evolving with new styles and trends and I am always looking to improve my technique as well.

Besides enhancing my clients’ beauty, I am also a Master Trainer for Beauty Angels. I have trained more than 200 students and plan on continuing to teach classes. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with those who are as passionate as me in permanent makeup.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I am very stubborn in nature and this may have been the most important quality that brought me here today. Building a client base was very challenging but I believed my work was up to par or better than many people that were fully booked for months. I did not give up even when I had days when I did not have a single client.

Being a perfectionist and always practicing and evolving my techniques has kept me in the business for 8 years. My work does not stop when I leave my shop. To this day, I still practice drawing eyebrows.

Also, passion for permanent makeup and making my clients persevere their youthful look is only one part of this equation. Ultimately this is a business and you need a business plan. From deciding your location to whether or not you want to work for yourself or someone else is all very important and will lead to very different experiences.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Competition is extremely fierce in this industry. Microblading used to be a new trend but now has become a staple in the beauty industry and many people are trying to cash in. This is where I drown out the noise and do not let the completion bother me. I focus on perfecting my craft and inventing new techniques. I have expanded my services to include different eyebrow techniques as well as lip and eyeliner.

Also, with many competitors just looking to cash in, I have seen way more botched eyebrow procedures than these two hands can fix. I have had many clients come in to correct someone else’s work. Sometimes I am able to fix it but unfortunately there are times where they need laser removal to remove a botched procedure.
