Meet Zarina Williams

We were lucky to catch up with Zarina Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Zarina, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I’ve learned that being the only one in the room who looks like me can actually be an opportunity to bring unique perspectives and strengths to the table. To be effective in these situations, I focus on understanding my own strengths and weaknesses. This self-awareness helps me navigate any situation with confidence, knowing when to step up and offer insights or when to listen and learn. I approach every challenge with the mindset that my role is not just to represent my background, but also to contribute meaningfully to the process—whether that means facilitating discussions, offering new viewpoints, or helping to drive solutions in ways others might not have considered.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a fashion stylist based in Los Angeles, specializing in both personal styling and photoshoot styling. My work focuses on helping clients elevate their wardrobes, whether they need an upgrade for their everyday style or custom outfits for photoshoots, whether commercial or personal. What excites me the most about my work is the incredible transformation I get to be a part of. Every time I work with a client, I feel motivated and inspired by their unique stories, and I’m always energized by the positive impact my styling can have on their lives.

One of the things I love most is how my clients react when they see the results. For example, I worked with a client who had a very work-focused lifestyle, mostly dressing in suits, and had lost sight of her personal style and confidence. After talking with her about her goals, I suggested we try some classic yet feminine silhouettes, encouraging her to embrace her beauty without always covering up. The transformation was amazing—her confidence soared, and she even started going on dates more frequently. It was a powerful reminder of how styling isn’t just about clothes; it’s about helping people feel more empowered and comfortable in their own skin.

It’s moments like these that fuel my passion for styling. I love showing people how they can look and feel their best. Whether it’s through a wardrobe overhaul or creating the perfect look for a shoot, my goal is always to help others express their confidence and personality through their style.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, there are three qualities that I believe have been most impactful on my journey as a fashion stylist: open-mindedness, creativity, and professionalism.

First, being open-minded is crucial. In this industry, not every client is immediately receptive to new ideas, and it can be challenging to introduce changes to someone’s personal style. But being open-minded allows you to explore alternative solutions and adjust your approach until you find the right fit. It’s about adapting to each situation and being willing to try different angles.

Second, creativity is at the heart of what I do. Styling is an art, and it’s important to keep your creativity flowing constantly. There will be moments where you face roadblocks, whether it’s a challenging client or a specific look you’re trying to create. But when you’re in a constant state of creative exploration, you can push through those challenges and find innovative solutions.

Lastly, professionalism has been key to building trust with my clients and maintaining long-term relationships. Whether it’s through clear communication, respecting deadlines, or maintaining a high standard of service, professionalism helps you establish credibility and respect in the industry. A tactful, respectful approach goes a long way in cultivating a positive environment for both clients and collaborators.

For those early in their journey, my advice would be to stay open-minded and embrace the learning process. Your creativity will grow the more you challenge yourself, and the more you push your limits, the stronger your skills will become. And never underestimate the value of professionalism—how you communicate and carry yourself will determine the strength of your relationships and the success of your business.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

My ideal clients are professional men and women who are looking to upgrade their wardrobe but aren’t sure where to start. I work with people who may feel overwhelmed by shopping or simply don’t have the time to curate their style. This could include individuals who want to revamp their professional wardrobe on a budget, or those looking for a fresh perspective on their personal style.

I’m also a great fit for clients seeking styling for commercial projects. I’m able to quickly shift gears and create multiple looks to suit various themes or concepts, which is ideal for fast-paced, creative environments.

Another ideal client is someone whose body or lifestyle has changed and is looking for new ways to dress in a way that feels flattering and authentic to their current self. I love helping people discover styles that embrace their transformation and empower them to feel confident in their clothes.
