We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lina Shuliar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lina , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism, if I can call it that, comes from a place of acceptance. I don’t really label myself as overly optimistic, but I’ve never been one to dwell in negativity either. I think it’s more about embracing whatever comes my way, whether it’s good or bad. I travel, I explore, I take risks—because I’ve learned that life will be what I make of it. I don’t worry too much about how hard things can get. I accept that challenges are part of the journey, and ultimately, I trust that whatever happens is part of my story. People can get caught up in overanalyzing or dramatizing life, and I used to be that way too. But now, I’ve realized that the key is to simply choose to be present and embrace whatever reality comes my way. For me, that acceptance is what gives me the peace and the “optimism” to move forward.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember—creating, decorating, and generating ideas is simply how I express myself. Originally, I wanted to build a career in the animation industry, but my random interest in tattoos turned into a career. I never considered tattooing as a career choice, but my love for tattoos and the encouragement of my friends led me down this path. It’s been almost 15 years now, and I love this journey.
Over the years, I’ve traveled a lot, drawing inspiration from different cultures and folklore. Each place I’ve visited has transformed me in some way, and it’s amazing how the world and its stories shape my art. My tattoo work is deeply influenced by the diversity I’ve experienced—especially the mystical and dark aesthetics that I love to bring to my designs.
When I moved to the United States three years ago, my career as a tattoo artist grows so fast. I’ve participated in several conventions and shows, meeting incredible people who share my passion. The energy and vibe I connect with my clients is something I treasure deeply. It’s not just about the tattoos themselves but about the connection I build with each person. I focus on creating unique, custom designs with a dark, mystical vibe, whether it’s inspired by folklore or fantasy. I always make sure the tattoo is personalized, reflecting the client’s personality and desires. Tattooing is a big decision, and I feel a deep sense of responsibility to ensure it’s the perfect fit.
Currently, I’m based in Miami, and I’m in the process of planning my own tattoo studio. I envision a space where clients can relax, disconnect from their daily routines, and truly enjoy the experience of getting tattooed. Miami’s unique atmosphere and climate provide the perfect backdrop for this vision, and I’m excited to create a comfortable, welcoming environment where people feel at ease during their sessions.
On top of my tattoo work, I’m also developing an aftercare product line specifically for tattooed skin. The line includes a nourishing skin butter and sunscreen formulated with only organic ingredients. I’ve collaborated with my dermatologist to create products that are gentle and effective. I’ve tested them extensively on myself and a few friends, and so far, the results have been fantastic. I’m excited to launch them soon and share them with my clients on social media.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. “Whatever happens, it leads you to the best path in your journey.” I wish I had learned this sooner—it would have saved me a lot of stress. But in the end, everything happens for a reason. Just stay calm and accept what comes your way. Stress is unnecessary.
2. “Don’t build expectations, and you’ll never be disappointed.” Expectations can ruin your plans, trust me. The price you pay is your mood and overall experience.
3. “Learn to listen to yourself; you always have the answers to your questions.” I believe this is the hardest skill to master. But once you do, you’ll be able to move forward with ease and joy.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I’m always excited to collaborate with people from different industries. I’ve already had the opportunity to work with clothing brands and brands that create useful tools for tattoo artists.
I dream of creating a clothing collection, jewelry, or even a perfume with a unique scent.
I’m eager to expand my art beyond just skin and paper, and reach even more people who share the same vibe and interests as I do.
