Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrew James Goodier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Andrew James, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
From a very young age I’ve always felt the urge to thrive and grow with everything I do. Whether that be at school, learning to play the guitar and the first time a picked up a camera! I had stopped for many years due to becoming an adult in later life. I started in the military straight from school, and then moved on to other roles outside of the military. I’ve always feel like I’ve been an achiever and if there is something that I want, I have to get it!
I feel my work ethic comes from both sides of my family as both parents work relentlessly and have for many years and still to this day! I lost a friend of mine who always said I should pick up a camera again. As we used to go on hikes and adventures together with my camera, the first camera I had was a Nikon Coolpix, still have it to this day.
After my friends passing I decided to make my photography business from scratch, with no marketing experience or help from other photographers to start with. In my first year I managed to become a finalist in the North of England Wedding Awards and did a total of 21 weddings!
Due to my work ethic and constant want for more, and to get my business known, I managed to secure a wedding in Salt Lake City in 2025! Never did I think I’d make it international!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At Andrew James Photography, we specialise in natural and in-the-moment photography, capturing the essence of your special moments without being obtrusive. Our goal is to blend in with the shadows and let the magic unfold, resulting in timeless and authentic images that you’ll cherish forever.
I possess a unique ability to capture raw, authentic moments in various settings, showcasing the true essence of individuals and their connections. My intuitive nature enables me to anticipate and frame moments effortlessly, ensuring that every photograph showcases genuine emotions and candid interactions. Whether it’s a wedding, a family shoot, or any other occasion, my approach emphasises spontaneity and emotion, resulting in timeless and heartfelt memories that resonate with both my clients and their loved ones for years to come.
With many years of experience in photography, my journey began with a passion for capturing wildlife in its natural habitat, honing skills in composition and storytelling. Transitioning to family photography, the love and connection within my own family inspired me to create meaningful and cherished memories for others. Encouraged to formalise this talent into a business, I have embraced the opportunity to share my gift of freezing moments in time with a broader audience, bringing joy and nostalgia through every captured image.
Specialising in a diverse range of photography genres, my portfolio now encompasses a wide array of moments and milestones, including weddings, engagements, family shoots, portraiture, and event photography. Each opportunity to frame these precious occasions allows me to weave unique narratives through visual storytelling, ensuring that every shot is not just a moment frozen in time but a reflection of the emotions and connections that make them infinitely special. The ability to transition seamlessly between these different spheres of photography showcases my versatility, passion, and dedication to immortalising memories in a way that is both artistic and deeply personal for every client.
At the age of 27 and within the first year of this amazing business, I never thought I’d be where I am today!
Thank you to all my clients, you really are the best!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Firstly, I believe the most important quality of a Wedding Photographer is PATIENCE. Nothing happens over night, building a successful business takes time, months, or even years. But a true work ethic, drive for success and patience really helped me guide my path!
Creativity is a skill that every photographer needs, whether that be, wedding, wildlife or landscape to name a few. Creativity is what makes you stand out from your competitors. What do you have what they don’t, every client is different int he way they want there images to look but ultimately, if you have a creative eye for your work you may stand out from the rest!
Thirdly, knowledge, there are many acronyms in photography that help understanding things such as ISO, to someone who doesn’t know anything about a camera they’d have no idea. But then there’s things like knowledge of the camera, how you use the camera, all the settings, what they all do, how you put them all together to get the correct exposure and etc. The list for knowledge goes on! However, I can say, practise makes perfect, your knowledge will improve over time.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am on the hunt for other photographers and videographers to work with! My business is picking up and I’m not able to book some clients due to being already booked so it would be great for some people to come aboard!
In the near future I am looking for models, locations, make up artists, clothing designers to do some staged shoots which we can use for our websites and social media’s for promotion and marketing!
