Meet Naomi Perkins

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Naomi Perkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Naomi , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I have art running through my veins and embedded in my genes. It’s like a compulsion that drives me to create. Like most of our personality traits, I think my work ethic is a little bit nature and nurture.

My desire to create beautiful things comes naturally to me because I come from a long line of artists. If you stepped into to my home, you would see whimsical watercolor paintings by my mother, delicate floral china paintings by my grandmother, oil paintings by my great-grandfather, and unique wooden furniture built by the hands of my father, the master craftsman.

I constantly work to nurture the artist in me by letting go of perfectionism. If you wait for the thing to be perfect, you’ll never be finished. In regards to water color painting, my mom taught me that you have to learn to recognize when you painting is done and put down the brush. If you work it over too much, you will ruin it.

In the creative process, I also find it helpful to honor your changing energy levels and moods. I try to follow my passions and only pour my energy into things that I am excited about. If a project is no longer making me happy, I’ll set it aside until it sparks my interest again.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a wife and mother of two young boys as well as a writer, artist, candle maker, and baker. I am living out my dream of being a stay-at-home mom, which has opened up so many of these creative outlets for me.

My latest project is the Greenwoman Journal that I created with the help of my friends and mentors, Sandra Knauf and Zora Knauf. It’s available now on Amazon.

This journal will sync your intentions with the naturally occurring cycles of Mother Nature. Manifest your dreams through guided journal entries for each new moon and full moon cycles and a monthly calendar.

Dig into inspiration for fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season each month and gardening checklists for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

I’m constantly learning, growing, and creating and this journal is a place where I can manifest, daydream, and put some organization to all my wild ideas. This is why I created this journal, and I hope it helps others bring their dreams to fruition as well.

I’m also a columnist for the Greenwoman blog at Greenwoman.substack.com where I write about motherhood, homemaking, poetry, astrology, cooking, crafting, and whatever DIY project I’m into next.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

As an artist and writer, there are three things that I try to practice on my journey to living out my highest potential.

1. What’s the rush? You have your whole life to do great things so don’t give up if you feel like you’re not achieving your definition of success right away. If your endeavors are not taking off in the timeframe that you were hoping for, then it’s possible the universe is only giving you as much as you can handle right now.

2. Listen to your intuition and follow your joy. This may come naturally to some people but this skill is something I had to develop. As a chronic people-pleaser, it can be hard for me to make decisions and figure out what I want for myself. To become more aligned in this area, I try to check in with myself when I have to make a decision and see how I feel in my body. If the idea is exciting to me, then it is a good thing and I should go for it. If it is causing me dread, I release myself from feeling obligated.

3. Don’t be afraid to change, grow, and adapt. I think the beauty in being human is evolving and trying new things. Don’t wait for the perfect plan to come together before you follow your dreams. Just go for it and if you need to change directions down the road, it’s okay.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents are my greatest sources of inspiration. They are both artists and I admire their creativity and eye for beautiful aesthetics. The most impactful thing they did for me was teach me to be a free thinker through open communication and providing a safe space for me to express myself. My parents have always encouraged me, complimented me, and made me feel special, beautiful, and loved.
