Meet Cindy Kapas

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cindy Kapas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Cindy, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

Growing up, I was stressed and anxious all the time. I put a lot of pressure on myself to not mess anything up. I considered myself a pessimist and things didn’t really change until I met my better half, Peter. He was someone that always saw the glass half full and found the silver lining in the most challenging situations. I grew to really appreciate that about him and learned to adopt that outlook on life myself. You only get one life, why waste time sweating the small stuff?

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m the co-founder of Kapas Media LLC based in Gwinnett County. We focus primarily on cinematic videos and product photography. As a small business where it’s just me and my husband, we wear all the hats when it comes to running our own business. We’ve never had a business of our own before and it feels exciting to venture down this new path doing what we’re passionate about. Running a business is a huge learning curve of course and we’ve made plenty of mistakes, but we’re glad we’re learning them together and early on.

As a business, we’re really passionate about building community. Peter and I are both third culture kids and we love learning about all the different cultures around us. When it comes to our work, we become pretty obsessed with the storytelling aspect of our jobs. We want to know everything about our clients and help bring their vision to life on screen!

We’d love to make our own versions of shows and movies we’ve seen so any chance we get to make a snippet of it, makes our day. Right now some projects we’re working on that we’re really excited about is the origin story of how one of our favorite bakeries (Third Culture) in California began. We’re also about to begin filming some promotional videos for a popular med-spa in Atlanta. Other exciting news is we will be offering our cinematic video services for weddings and events in 2025!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, my top three valuable skills and qualities would have to be genuineness, perseverance, and project management. Before leaving my corporate job, I was working as a project manager in tech. I learned a lot of valuable skills in corporate and leading a team. That career helped me overcome a lot of my fears and I have been able to apply those skills in running my own business. I believe our customers like working with us because we’re professional and organized.

Personal qualities like being genuine and perseverance can be learned as long as you’re patient. Starting something new can be challenging, especially if you’re changing careers like myself. I stay true to myself and be authentic as possible because people pick up on that. It’s also very easy to give up and many people run out of patience, which is why perseverance is an important quality to have to keep pushing yourself to new heights even when majority of the people around you doubt you. I especially felt lonely when I started my business. Not many people I knew were doing what I was doing or even had their own business.

The journey was hard, but it really is mind over matter. I recommend connecting with like-minded people and finding helpful resources. I started putting myself out there and joining different groups like my local chamber of commerce. I also was on the lookout for conferences and classes to sign up for that may benefit me and my business. Over time, I started finding people at those events that were in similar situations and continued to follow up with them.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Our biggest challenge is getting our name out there and earning people’s business. As a new business in town, it’s hard to stand out among our competitors who have been around much longer than us. We’ve been working on creating social media content regularly to get the word out that we exist and we know a thing or two about making cinematic videos. We also have been active in networking and attending events regularly with our local chamber of commerce. We hope that over time we will become a familiar face and people will be more comfortable to approach us about any inquiries or even recommend us to others that may be interested in our services. The thing that probably helped us the most was going to businesses and doing an exchange of services. We provided a high quality video and they offered whatever service they provided. This was a low risk opportunity for the client and they were happy with the end result that they referred us to friends and family!
