Meet Yolanda L.

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yolanda L.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yolanda below.

Yolanda , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

Sometimes life can feel like you’re drowning in an ocean with no way to safe yourself. My life has felt this way for years. As a single mom I am always battling. My resiliency comes from my daughter. I always need to keep striving and keep trying for her. She is my life vest. My faith also plays a big part. Knowing that I’m protected, provided for and loved helps so much.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As a profession I have the privilege to help the elderly and disabled with healthcare. Being able to assist people at the toughest times has been a blessing.
I am always trying to improve myself and find ways to grow.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

First of the three qualities are never giving up. There is so much more in store for me.

Second is a skill I think the world is missing. Forgiveness.. I no longer let the hurt and pain confine me. Hurt people hurt people and I don’t want to hurt anyone. I want a life that’s love filled.

Third is a bit of knowledge. Kids absorb everything. They absorb your pain, your trauma and everything in between. With that in mind I try to be mindful of what my kid sees, what she hears about herself. I teach her to love herself. I’ve tried to heal my inner self to be a healthy parent for her. We are not perfect but we try and are full of love.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

In all openness and realness. We struggle. I’m a single parent who doesn’t make a lot of money. I have a child who is a product of a very violent relationship. I was able to break free with help but WE STRUGGLE. Somehow, I have raised an awesome child who is the light of my world. She will be a voice to someone one day. She will make a difference in this world and that is what keeps me going. My child’s name means LIFE. She gave me a second chance at life. I fight for her and will continue to be the best I can. Finances will work themselves out some day. I hope. I will keep bettering myself. I will keep going.
