Meet Dorothy Mannine

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dorothy Mannine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Dorothy, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Like most of us, any confidence I had as a young kid was diminished by my teenage years from self-image issues, bullying, and societal expectations. It has taken me a gradual process of almost 10 years to have the confidence that I do today. There isn’t just one thing that contributes to confidence, nor does it really have much to do with what you look like, unlike what most believe. My confidence has stemmed from learning how I deserve to be treated, and not tolerating any less. Doing things that scare me and reminding myself of what I am capable of. Being bold enough to take up space in the way that feels good to me, and letting go of what other’s think about it. Learning to start treating myself like my own best friend and relentlessly loving myself through everything. Introducing positive talk to myself, eliminating any negative self talk and lastly, getting to know myself inside and out. Practicing these fundamental things over time has built a strong foundation of confidence in me, but the key is also to know that you must do these things forever! It’s a muscle that should always be worked on, so that we can face the world every day with our heads held high.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My biggest passion is my acting career. All of my additional interests, like content creation, are all cultivated to support my acting. After years on the stage and studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, I’ve been focusing more on the film/tv side of the business. You may have seen me pop up on your TV recently with my national Proactiv commercial or my episode of HGTV’s Rommate Hunters. A memberable moment that happened this year was my major collaboration with Garnier. It started off as a Tiktok collaboration, lead to a national commercial, and then I became the face of the hair color in stores as part of an exclusive launch. I am most recognized from my Tiktok, which has a loving family of 1.5million followers now, or my features in the viral Dhar Mann videos. I am also a streamer on Twitch, and recently expanded my content over to Youtube as well. All of my content is meant to entertain, inspire, or comfort each individual. It’s typically a mix of skits, encouraging words, and the occasional improv. With everything I do it is my goal to empower each individual to love who they are, and to feel confident in their own skin. I’ve got a couple of exciting things on the horizion that aren’t set in stone for release dates yet, but stay tuned for (spoiler alert) a book on the way!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have contributed most to my journey have been my growth mindset, consistency, and self care. It is so important to have a growth mindset for progress; my willingness to retain the new things I learn from books/podcasts/speakers has drastically changed the way I view life, and how I go about bettering my life every single day. You have to be willing to unattach yourself from the way “you’ve always done things” and welcome in new, better ideas on how to grow. Secondly, my entire platform wouldn’t have been able to grow without consistency. You have to set a schedule for yourself and stick to it, even on the days you don’t feel like it. Then, with enough time, your consistency for that particular goal becomes a habit, and it’s second nature. For me this was filming a Tiktok every single day. Consistency takes discipline, and once you learn discipline, it can benefit all aspects of your life, not just your career. Finances, health, spirituality, organization, you name it. And lastly but just as importantly, self care. Taking care of yourself is key for being able to be persistent in your dreams. Knowing how to be kind to yourself, forgiving to yourself, and what you need to feel your best will refill your energy so that you can perform your best every day. My best advice for all of these is to incorporate one baby step at a time. Listen to 5 minutes of a TedTalk today, decide you are going to go for a walk once a week, try a 5 minute meditation, any step that you feel like is achievable. Small steps over time become monumental changes.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed there is two things I always do, express it, and then take a step back. I usually express through a creative outlet that ISN’T correlated to what I do for work, like painting, journaling, or dancing. Once the overwhelming emotions have been released through some sort of outlet, then it’s time I take a step into simpler practices. Things like going on a hike to see the sunset, meditating at a park, reading a book on the beach, any grounding activity that is detached from technology/work and more connected with nature or presentness with the world. If you need a quick fix from being overwhelmed and you can’t go do something, focus on your breath, deep inhales and exhales, and then reconnect with the present moment by pointing out 5 things in your surroundings. Learning emotional regulation, presence, and breathwork has been a game changer for quickly recovering from any overwhelming moments.
