We were lucky to catch up with Caitlyn Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlyn, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
That’s a great question –
I think I have slowly developed it as I’ve gotten older. The more independent I became, the more I had to create this thick skin and resilience around me. It is definitely an acquired tool to have in this industry. You’re going to hear a lot of No’s before a Yes. It is not easy but I guess just trusting and believing in myself even when no one else does. I think that has really built this tool tremendously for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am and will always be focused on my craft; Acting. I have always loved performing whether that’s acting, dancing, or singing. I mainly do film acting but started in musical theater. Although I do miss the theater, my heart has always been set on film. There is this great quote from film director, Frank Capra. He says “No Saint, no pope, no general, no sultan has ever had the power that a filmmaker has: the power to talk to hundreds of millions of people for two hours in the dark.”
I feel so grateful I get to be a part of that type of storytelling. Sending a message to the world within a film as I get to make people feel certain emotions through the characters I portray. It is such a cool “job”.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being persistent – Very cliche but seriously never give up. Being persistent is such a key in life. It is hard as an entrepreneur and creative to keep going when you keep on getting knocked down. You just never know when that opportunity might come or when that door might open. Persistency in your craft will keep pushing you and advancing you in the next steps.
Integrity/confidence – Always be honest and true to yourself. This is a tough business so make sure you know what you want and be proud of that. I think it will go a along way when you’re meeting with important people, performing in your craft or just walking down the street. Don’t be scared to go after what you want.
Adaptability – Making sure you can adapt with last-minute changes in schedules, scripts, work environments, etc.. is crucial.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Honestly, I try to take some time for myself. Sometimes just a day to yourself and being alone really helps. Not thinking about your craft or working on it is needed. Do something you love to do or that’s just peaceful so you can breathe. It is very easy to feel overwhelmed or anxious here. I like to take my painting supplies and bring them to the park or just have a movie day. This helps me a lot when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
