Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chase Bryant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chase , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I find purpose by actively pursuing and nurturing Art and Love as much as possible. This fallen realm we exist in can lose its meaning and purpose easily when caught up in superfluous and fleeting pursuits but the times I’m happiest or most fulfilled are when I am playing bass, learning a new piece, performing onstage, recording, composing, contributing to someone else’s art or creating my own. That or when I’m in love. If I can facilitate or align myself with a path that will sustain or grow these parts of my life I feel I am fulfilling my purpose objectively. Straying from that path only leads to confusion, pain or a hamster wheel existence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I grew up in London, Ontario Canada and was 15 years old when I acquired my first bass guitar. I knew then it was what I wanted to devote my life to so after highschool I attended University of Windsor to get my bachelor in music studying Classical music on upright bass. After graduating I quickly realized I was more interested in playing in bands and touring then joining a local orchestra or pursuing a teaching career. That same year my mom passed away from Breast Cancer, it was a really tough year for me but also pushed me to move to Los Angeles and attend Musician’s Institute. In less than I month I knew I was here to stay and that this was where my art and career could thrive. I joined a progressive fusion band called Mammoth which really pushed me and taught me many things. I have been recording and releasing material with them to this day, currently known as Thrailkill. Not long after I joined the band ONI and was writing and rehearsing in the Cayman Islands, touring with bands I used to have posters of on my way such as Children of Bodom and Gojira. After that wild ride I left to join the thrash titans Warbringer. My second album with the band comes out next spring titled “Wrath and Ruin”. I’ve joined a blues band called FatherDaddy that has been highly fulfilling creatively, we record our first album this December 2024. I play at a church downtown, teach, tune pianos and gig as often as possible. Its a labor of love and a hustle but I wouldn’t have it any other way and count my blessings daily. I have a solo record in the works that is different from most things I have been a part of, planning for a 2025 release.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Throughout my journey there have been many formative experiences but if I had to isolate it to three the first would have to be my classical education in Windsor. Learning how to play under a conductor and being one small part of an orchestra, reading, following, interpreting, meshing 30 other musicians to fulfill one vision and sound like one voice. Highly valuable skills that taught me how and what it means to be a career musician. The next would have to be the trials and tribulations of my life, losing people tragically at a young age taught me not to take anything for granted and that this life is short and guarantees you nothing. Lastly I would have to say moving to Los Angeles for music has had the huge impact. Being a small fish amongst the best in the world, the influences and inspirations, the good, the bad and the ugly, the depth, beauty, and darkness that is so abundant in this town. Having to form your own identity and prove your worth to yourself and your piers. Earning that spot and knowing that a city like this will chew you up and spit you out if you don’t fight for your passion and adapt and grow daily. These are the experiences and qualities push me to continue on my path and not settle
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book ‘Papillon’ was a big inspiration of mine and was a catalyst to take many leaps of faith on my journey. Banished by his country for a murder he didn’t commit, sent to Guiana and eventually ‘Devil’s Island’ The main character exhausts every means imaginable at escape but finally takes a giant leap of faith towards freedom. Its a beautiful story and very cool book.
