We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erin McGuire. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erin below.
Erin, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
I grew up in a home with alcoholism and narcissism and had all the limiting beliefs you can think of, felt not good enough and unloved, struggled with anxiety and complex PTSD from childhood trauma and a sexual assault in my 20’s, was the queen of people pleasing and perfectionism, got overwhelmed very easily and struggled in all the major areas of my life.
I was also very good at masking and hiding it. One of the ways I hid it was by being an overachiever, constantly striving for the next big thing. I felt like I was never doing, or being enough.
I overworked myself.
This coping mechanism worked until I burnt myself out and suffered from adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue, hypothyroid issues and hormonal imbalances-all products of my nervous system being constantly dysregulated.
Doctors told me I was depressed and wanted to put me on anti-depressants after they put me on thyroid medications and I still felt exhausted like I was dragging myself behind me. Having to lay down by 1pm and work from bed, because I was so exhausted. I stopped having a social life, because I was so exhausted all the time and couldn’t go out after 5pm.
Finding somatic work and nervous system healing was the missing piece of the puzzle for me. After doing this work myself, I healed chronic fatigue, got off the thyroid meds and never looked back! I have helped others do the same. I also found a company that I now partner with that is nutrient dense superfoods and supplements that have given me even more of my energy back.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been an Intuitive Channel, Healer, Yoga Teacher, Retreat Leader and Somatic Coach for over 14 years. From my own suffering and pain, I was able to find my purpose in helping others heal from similar situations that I had been in. To be able to be a part of how someone’s life changes is truly a gift and I am in love with what I get to do in the world.
I have almost completed my first book, titled The Art of Unraveling where I tell my story from pain to awakening and give tools and techniques that have helped me along the way. I have a 6 month group program coming out in January 2025 called Aligned to help women reclaim their divine feminine energy. I will also be leading my 10 month training program called The Lightworker Academy in 2025.
I am truly passionate about helping others have a deep, long-lasting transformation.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think Theta Healing, which is a type of energy healing that I now do which clears subconscious blocks was extremely impactful for me. I really began to see my life change when I started that work on myself in 2010.
Manifestation work would be another tool that really helped me. Learning how to change my thoughts around and focus my attention toward what I truly wanted, even if I didn’t have it yet and believe it was on its way to me, was so so helpful in my life.
Lastly, I would definitely say Somatic Work/Nervous System Healing was the missing piece of the puzzle for me and my journey. Deeply learning how trauma had wired me to be in an activated nervous system state and begin to learn how to get out of that was life changing for me.
My advice is don’t give up on yourself. You can heal from anything and keep following what lights you up, because that will lead you to exactly what you need in life.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I would say my biggest area of growth over the past 12 months is in receiving. My wedding actually really helped me to learn receiving on a whole new level. As someone who grew up with childhood trauma, receiving things was not really safe. It was easier to give and help others than it was to receive.
But receiving is a part of life and you are out of balance if you are only giving all the time and not receiving. So I have been having to learn that a lot. Some really powerful things happened during my wedding last month and there was so much love from friends and family I really have a whole new perspective on receiving that I am grateful for.
