We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jianing Hou a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jianing, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism is rooted in my curiosity and appreciation for the diverse cultures and stories that people bring to the table. I’ve always been fascinated by how traditions, values, and personal experiences shape our perspectives. As a photographer, I’m constantly inspired by the unique ways people express their joy, love, and identity. Capturing these moments not only deepens my understanding of the world but also reminds me of the beauty and resilience in human connections
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a photographer based in Atlanta, specializing in capturing meaningful moments through natural, soft, and timeless imagery. My journey began with a love for storytelling, shaped by my background in China and my experiences living in France for seven years. These cultural influences have given me a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for the diversity of traditions and emotions that define each client’s story.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities have been pivotal in my journey as a photographer: adaptability, empathy, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Adaptability: Every shoot is unique, from the lighting to the emotions of the people involved. Living in different countries taught me to embrace change and work with what’s available. For those starting out, I’d recommend being open to challenges and viewing them as opportunities to grow. Experiment with different settings, environments, and techniques to broaden your skills.
Empathy: Connecting with clients on a personal level is essential. Understanding their stories, emotions, and expectations allows me to capture genuine moments.
Commitment to Learning: Photography is constantly evolving, whether it’s through new technology or creative trends. My curiosity and willingness to learn have kept me inspired and improving. I encourage new photographers to invest in workshops, seek mentorships, and stay curious about their craft. The more you learn, the more confident and versatile you’ll become.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who values authenticity and the beauty of storytelling. They understand that photography is not just about capturing poses but about preserving emotions, connections, and the little moments that make life meaningful.I’m especially drawn to clients who appreciate cultural traditions and unique details. Having lived in China and France, I love incorporating diverse influences into my work, whether it’s through a traditional tea ceremony or a modern, minimalist aesthetic.
