Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shawneé Owens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shawneé, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
First and foremost, It’s important to remember that confidence is an illusion—meaning like, it’s an intentional choice to believe in yourself, even when you’re uncertain. When you present yourself with assurance, you’re more likely to succeed because people respond to that energy. The number 1 thing that I feel like I hear all the time from people in higher-level positions is that even then they are still “just figuring it out”…but because they lead with confidence you would never know! The reality is that nobody can know everything, but once you figure out what you are good at it’s important to recognize that you ARE really good at it and stand on that.
Once I was able to grasp that as a concept, I feel like I had cracked the code of confidence. There is a lot that I don’t know, but at the same time there is a lot that I do! So my confidence is something that continues to develop because I’m willing to learn through experience. Every new situation, challenge, or opportunity has been a chance to grow and reinforce my belief in myself. A lot of my confidence often starts there: with experience and belief.
At the same time, it’s important to remember that everything you want to do is possible! Exposure to what’s possible is essential in developing confidence. There’s power in proximity and surrounding yourself with positive, uplifting people who believe in their potential and yours can make all the difference. Confidence is contagious, and when you’re around others who exude it, it has a way of inspiring you to believe in yourself even more.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are learning to ask directly for what I want, realizing there’s always more than one way to get to a “yes,” and developing the ability to connect and communicate with new people. Asking directly for what you want can be intimidating at first, but it’s an essential skill for getting what you need and setting clear intentions. Recognizing that “no” doesn’t always mean the end has helped me stay persistent and creative in finding alternative ways to reach my goals. And, of course, being able to build genuine relationships and network with new people has opened countless doors—it’s all about who you know and how you make those connections count.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to be intentional about the relationships you build. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and align with your values. Be solid in what you bring to the table—know your strengths and what you have to offer. And most importantly, seek out collaborations where there’s mutual interest and benefit. Growth is always better when it’s a shared experience.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Always! I’m constantly looking to collaborate with individuals and brands that align with my vision. My ultimate goal is to produce visual campaigns for businesses and brands committed to authentically representing Black people or employing Black creators to tell those stories. Representation matters, and I’m passionate about creating content that feels genuine, relatable, and impactful.
I’m particularly interested in partnering with other creators who share a dedication to producing high-quality content that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you’re a filmmaker, photographer, writer, or strategist, if you’re about creating meaningful work, I’d love to connect.
