We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paulo Pales a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Paulo, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
As a self-employed video editor, I often find myself battling burnout, especially since I tend to work late into the night. To manage this, I’ve learned to be more selective about the projects I take on. By focusing on fewer projects, I can dedicate my energy and creativity to what truly inspires me. This approach not only helps me maintain a higher quality of work but also gives me the space to recharge and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Travel has been a game changer for me. Whenever I can, I make it a priority to explore new places. It’s a privilege that I cherish, and capturing moments through photography helps me disconnect from my editing work. This hobby allows me to express my creativity in a different way, and it’s refreshing to see the world through a lens. Traveling not only clears my mind but also reignites my passion for storytelling. Ultimately, I believe that taking time to step back and recharge is essential for anyone, especially in creative fields, and it reminds me that balance is key to sustained inspiration.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a self-employed video editor, and I work with content creators to help them save time on editing. This allows them to focus on what they do best: planning and creating amazing content. It’s rewarding to support their visions and help bring their stories to life.
One of my job’s most exciting aspects is its freedom. I can travel while working! I’ve taken my laptop with me to places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and the USA, all while editing videos on the side. It’s a unique blend of work and exploration that keeps my life dynamic and inspiring.
Right now, I’m in the process of expanding my business. I’m looking to take on more projects and bring on aspiring video editors who are eager to learn. This will help me meet the needs of more clients while providing opportunities for others in the field.
I’m passionate about what I do and excited about the journey ahead. I can’t wait to see what life has in store for me in the future!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I would say that three traits—patience, kindness, and being grateful for everything that comes my way—were crucial to my journey. I constantly tell myself that if I just keep honing my craft, I’ll eventually look back and realize how far I’ve come.
My advice for anyone just starting out is straightforward: treat your clients or customers with kindness, have patience with yourself, and enjoy the small victories along the way. You’ll be shocked at how much you develop over time, and it all adds up!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! If anyone’s on the lookout for a video editor, I’d love to team up. Just reach out, and I’ll be happy to help you out with your project!
