Meet Kovid Dashora

We recently connected with Kovid Dashora and have shared our conversation below.

Kovid, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I don’t think i’ve ever been in a room where some one else looked like me. The battle of individuality and standing out didn’t start when I came to America, but way before that. It is not only limited to race or the color of your skin, but your individual style, hair color, clothes or just the way you carry yourself can spark a feeling of imposter syndrome and make you feel like you don’t belong in the crowd which ever since high school I have felt that way.

But coming to the US it was brought to my attention how my race and my communal background affects my identity. It did made me feel like the person who is fish out the water amongst others but it is something you need to embrace. It is what makes me special. My values, opinions and ideas that derive from the way I look makes my thoughts and work that more distinct and unique. It is what makes me, myself.

And it is that feeling of being different and acknowledging how the opinions and flavor I bring to the table is important not only for the people I represent but also in the grander scheme of things.

Being an Indian I can look different in a room full of people but what I have to say is equally as important because the world is looking at us now willing to know our story. So time to wonder about how we’re different is gone, it is time to act and show what we have as our substance and depth. It is time to tell the “different stories”.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Kovid Dashora and I’m a writer, filmmaker and musician from India. But in the context of modern pop culture and the importance of social media he role of digital creator that I fit in but I choose to but that’s something which feels a little off. The ambition is become an artist.

I want to be a story teller. There’s a lot of stories of my people that are not only limited to back home in south asia but these stories are connected to the world. Everywhere we go, Indians are thriving and making a mark and so as an international community and second or third generation immigrants, there’s a lot of youthful ideas and energy that I would like to show the world. First most, I want to show an Indians can be cool, desirable and intellectual

Having too much on my plate is a constant but that’s what I always wanted. One key factor I’m looking towards is building a creative collective, A team so everyone is welcomed to reach out and work.

There’s development on another film this year. With releasing and reaching out to places with previous films. Along with a lot of material for the internet. But my favorite has to be spending time writing songs for my album “Y2KAY”. All of this and lots of school work, I am yet to graduate.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The 3 most important qualities or skills or areas of knowledge are too less, There’s a lot that goes on but honestly first is a good ear/ eye, basically a taste of good things. I love music or films that are something which is not only considered great but the subversive or underrated kind that I scratch and find them, that’s my joy.
Love finding archival fashion and collectibles, Japanese figurines, Indian comics, American advertising stuff like that. That made me learn so many things, so Taste is one for me.

Secondly, I think the best thing is finding people who are interesting and have a library of knowledge about things and art that I might not have or even have dabbled into that. I think it is the most important thing, And somehow everyone does teach you a thing or two.

Third is very truly the love for the game. I really am blessed that what I do and my career path is in the same dimension as my passion. The love of creating and putting it out. that’s the one for me.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Wish I knew. But if you’re not feeling overwhelmed is it even worth it?
