We recently connected with Carl Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Carl , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Oddly, I am not totally sure where the desire to create comes from
It seems like some sort of force in the universe, that pushes and pulls at everything cyclically
I try not to try to hard, and let things happen, and work consistently, no matter what the climate
Politically or what the hardships of the day are, I try to make something
Or be creative in any way possible
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I make abstract landscape paintings, I try to reference
Abstract expressionism; the tradition of painting in the work along with personal creative aesthetics I have tried
To develop and maintain over my small life , I also make paintings of tax forms
But that’s a different story
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Perseverance 2. Drawing Talent 3. Study Art History
trust your own creative choices, over as long a time as possible. its ok to listen to advice but dont let anything anyone says redirect you from your personal creative path through life
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Clear Seeing Place by Brian Rutenberg, if you have time watch his studio visits on youtube, he has tons of advice and wisdom to give, all his videos have helped me immensely to forge my own path
