Meet Erica Hoyt

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erica Hoyt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erica below.

Erica , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

A saying on the wall in my sixth-grade classroom was, “Reach for the moon; even if you miss, you will land among the stars.” Reading that saying over and over again made me realize from that moment on there are many opportunities toward your goals in life. Taking risks is one of the stepping stones in order to achieve your dreams in anything you want to pursue. Learning life lessons can help guide your path and stay on the right path. Another saying that also lives in my head: “You only live once.” My mom instilled this saying in me if I was on the fence about trying something new. These words pushed me to become the woman I am today.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a current Arizona State University Student with a triple major in Geography (Meteorology-Climatology), Geographic Information Science (GIS), and Journalism & Mass Communication. I am a part of the ASU Weather and Climate Club as a Social Media Manager, making engaging posts about weather information in Arizona. I also volunteer with the American Meteorological Association Board on Student Affairs on the Committee of Student Conference Planning and Outreach/Engagement.

I like to learn anything and everything to succeed in any direction I plan on going.

In my free time, I enjoy nature photography, kayaking, playing pickleball, watching sports such as football, hockey, and baseball, shopping, and volunteering. Balancing classes with my hobbies can be challenging, but it is worth it to make time for things you love.

I aim to be a Broadcast Meteorologist at the local level or on The Weather Channel.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1) Being open to learning new things at an everchanging pace – Having the quality of being a fast learner is beneficial to employers, but learning new ways of doing a process more efficiently excels you and the company forward.

2) Don’t be afraid of trying new things – It may seem daunting at first, but all you have to do is try; if you are interested in a particular field/subject, why not try it and see where it can take you?

3) Take time for yourself – Whether it is listening to music, going for a run, or taking a self-care day. We all get burnt out, so just check in with your friends and family. Everything will be okay!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents have been there every step of the way in my academic journey. They are my rock, and I absolutely love them so much. I wouldn’t have been where I am today without them. The strength and determination they instilled in me will continue throughout my life. The most impactful thing they did for me was to push me to be the best I could possibly be, whether that was in sports or my academics.
