Meet Marcia Raybuck

We recently connected with Marcia Raybuck and have shared our conversation below.

Marcia, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I think my resilience came from my parents. My dad was determined to become an entrepreneur at a young age and turned down repeated well paying jobs and even a business being handed to him from my grandfather so he could make it on his own. He had some ups and downs, but he made it with a lot of help and support from my hard working mom!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a mom of 3 kids and a Canadian Immigrant. I wanted to be able to support my family financially, but also be home and available to to support them emotionally. I started my home based business “The Filigree Fern” in 2014. I started off selling bed canopies, inspired by my oldest daughter and now sell most any hand-sewn home decor item.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Running a home-based business takes a great deal of self-motivation and dedication. No one makes me punch in and start my day, except me! Procrastination isn’t an option. My kids are my drive. If there are days I don’t feel like working I remember I’m doing it for them.

Being organized and having a dedicated work room helps me separate work from home. This has been vital to successfully running my business.

A stubborn streak helps! I wish I could say that everyone in my life has been supportive of my business from the start. If I had let people talk me into quitting and giving up I never would have succeeded!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed it’s pointless to keep working, I will just make mistakes which will cause me trouble later. The best thing to do is to take a break! Self-care, self-love, and rest. Things always look better after a good night’s sleep.
