We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jayson Stolp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayson, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
That’s a great question. I think for many years I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, everything just seemed lacking and not very entertaining. When I first came into the trades, I followed my family trades and went and tried doing electrical work, but my fingers couldn’t do it when it was cold out as you can’t wear big gloves. Then I went and did masonry, which ended up being very fulfilling and exciting, as I got to be real creative and build very neat structures. I was a stone mason, and got to put together a piece of artwork, and it really helped pull out my creative side and help grow that. As time went on, I just got bored of it, and the challenge wasn’t there anymore. Turns out once you know how to install stone masonry in all the shapes and sizes, then it’s just about speed. I didn’t care so much about wanting to get faster, I just wanted more mental challenges as I realized I enjoy that part of work. It’s kind of where my brain started thinking about venturing out on my own as an entrepreneur. I finally did, and I haven’t looked back since! I started in construction, doing all sizes of projects, even saunas. And then, one day we were all sitting around at lunch break and googling saunas (as we were currently doing a large sauna remodel in a clients basement and kept talking about doing that for a living) and came across a mobile sauna over in Europe! This is truly what got my brain firing on all cylinders, and I immediately set out to build our first mobile sauna. I saw that this could be a thing in the market, and then I knew with our experience, knowledge, passion for saunas and craftsmanship, we were going to build some really neat saunas. It’s evolved from there, and it’s been such a fun road to be on. There are lots of bumps in the road, but the passion keeps you going! Doing what you love is important..
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are a custom sauna builder located in the sauna capital of the United States! We set out on a mission to build truly unique, one of a kind saunas that can last a lifetime. We wanted to build a product that is a one time purchase, offers true craftsmanship and quality, simple and easy to maintain/clean, and fully customizable products. We want our customers to be able to have their pick on every component of the sauna, and the word no is rarely said around our environment. It’s more of a “how do we get this end result?” We are just a small family owned company, and I am privileged to having great craftsman and friends that work with me every single day. It’s not about being the cheapest sauna on the market, we just want to confidently sell you a product that will last forever.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Great question!
1. Knowing how to work. It sounds silly but unfortunately, there are a lot of people that don’t know how to, or don’t know how to ghost that next gear when things get rough. You have to go into business expecting it to be long hours and grueling work, and that’s it’s not going to be easy. One of the things I always think about is that there are a certain amount of hours required to become successful, and there is no shortcut around that. You have to put in the work, and success will follow you if you can put in good, honest days of work.
2. Opening up your creative side. Do things to help you be creative. Try to think outside of the box. Get a good group of friends and mentors that understand you and can help you grow.
3. Passion. If you have passion for something, go do it. Passion is so powerful, and I remember my dad telling me when when I first started BW “I know you got this and it will go well, because I can see how much passion you have for saunas and wanting to take care of people”. That’s all he needed to know/see to have that confidence in helping me get started down this road.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
This is something we have thought about in great lengths at times, and never came up with a good answer as I can have the mindset “ well everyone is a good fit for what we offer”. But this isn’t necessarily true, as some people will certainly be turned away for a number of reasons. I would say a couple things we would say is:
1. If you want a truly bulletproof sauna that you can buy one time and never have to replace, then we are going to be a great fit for you. What some people don’t realize, is there is a price with that. It’s not a $10,000 barrel sauna that’s going to last maybe 5-10 years. Your paying for the value, the quality and craftsmanship, and the expertise we have to ensure all details are taken into consideration. We have thought about every single component of a sauna, and found the best combinations to get this result.
2. If you want a custom sauna, of course this is our bread and butter. We love this part, we geek out on it. Bring anything to us, and we can build it. If you want help with design, we can help with that as well!
3. Simple Design= Simple to clean. If you keep this mindset, you would be amazed to how much people there are that have realized that saunas aren’t hard to have, hard to maintain, this problem and that problem. We take that all into account and like mentioned already, that’s why we build them the way we do. They are built to withstand any type of weather you could throw at it, and are very well thought out saunas.
4. We offer all types of saunas. We have base models to start from, and then we can build any size outside of the base units. We won’t be the cheapest, but we aren’t the most expensive either. But if you look at it from a value perspective and what you get from buying a sauna from us, it’s money well spent!
