We were lucky to catch up with Lady Velush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Lady with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
When it comes to entertainment booking, the work ethic and drive is most important characteristic to have. When I first started in burlesque I had to make sure this was my chosen pathway. It wasn’t as important to get the booking but to be comfortable on stage within this craft. Honestly, the comfortability didn’t take long. Once I was able to see my talent was being recognized, I wanted to experience more of that joy I experience on stage. As time has gone on I have experience so many things that have enhanced my career. This is due to my drive towards making a difference on every single stage. Whether it be for body positivity or discovering the exploration of self love.
I love hearing that I have made a difference in the way people view the burlesque craft. I have opened their eyes to positive new sensations within themselves. Allowing my audience to be my drive has become the best part of my work ethic. I continue to push pass all the No’s to make room for the all of the Yes’s in my career as well as getting the opportunity to create for more safe spaces with people with work ethic like mine.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a burlesque dancer, I love it more than anything. The best part of being a burlesque dancer is the character development for each act curated. As a person who has theatre background, I enjoy essentially being a sexy storyteller and bringing live theatrics to every stage. My performances have shown the many patrons why I am THE CHICAGO SHOWDOLL. If anyone in the Chicagoland would love to see a burlesque show, I do post a lot of my appearances on my Instagram @lady_velush.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities I have lived by since joining this wonderful craft are my 3 C’s: Confidence, Community, and Creativity. This has impacted my journey everyday. All three qualities allow me to constantly play with act development and setting goals for my journey or future endeavors.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My support system has always been there for me. This includes my husband, Javon Jackson, mother, Jacqueline Mimms, and my chosen burlesque fam, Cocoa Pearlesque and Blaque Diamond. This people not only give me ideas for new material and inspire me but they pick me up when they see my spirit is down. I hope everyone gets a community like them when stepping into any new endeavor you face.
