Meet Carlos Evans

We were lucky to catch up with Carlos Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I’ve been in the music business for 30 plus years. Thats a dedicated way of life. With everything in life, there are lessons, rewards and defeats. From all of those experiences, good or bad, the hunger to continue never leaves because of the passion I’ve developed. The knowing that there’s still yet more to give and accomplish, along with the everyday challenges of life which we all maneuver through, creates balance which is a key factor in fostering an attribute such as resilience. Sometimes swift and sometimes difficult, I’ve balanced. Keeping a sharp eye and integrity on the burning desire to be that music exec/producer, to be that father, to be that son, to be that brother, to be that partner gives birth to resilience. Adversity is a part of life. One of my favorite quotes, ” The greatest glory in living, lies not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall” Nelson Mandela.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

So Im one half of Hip hops Golden era group The Umcs. From Staten Island NY. The Umcs hit the scene with our debut album Fruits of Nature in 91. We accomplished number 1 and 2 billboard charting records Blue Cheese and One to grown on. The Umcs had a 4 to 5 year span putting out 2 albums, touring, appearances on Soul train and many other public platforms. Umcs were also widely known for the appearance of their album poster on the hit comedy show Martin. Fast forward to the reinvention of myself Haas G of the Umcs to the present Fantom of the beat, the producer. Ive produced well known names such as Bustah Rhymes, Ghostface Killah, 50 cent and lil Kim, various Wutang members and countless others. I am 2x Grammy nominated and presently the record label FantoMusic CEO. I’ve evolved into whats necessary for our business of music which is in a state of crisis. Here to implement some well needed readjustment in the music business.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, my love and passion for music, my love and passion for electrical work and my respect and honor for those that came before me served me on this journey well. Without passion and desire theres no hard action. This is what allowed me to become an outstanding music producer and a very accomplished electrician. Without knowing where you come from, you can never know where you are going. Thats why I honor and respect those artist, music producers, electricians who paved the way before me. These are the things, along with integrity and driving desire, upcoming folks should improve upon.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Whenever trying to achieve greatness in life in general, it can get a little blurry at times. emotions can overload and mental tug of wars can occur. When these things happen I choose to practice a way of being called stillness. Its just like it sounds. Some say meditation, some say prayer and others say zen. Its basically calming the mind and heart down, breathing and taking in the very moment. This allows the clutter and confusing thoughts that are overtaking you to dissolve and create clarity for resolve.
