We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elena Burkhart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elena below.
Elena, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience thrives on adaptability, mental strength, optimism, and a deep belief in one’s ability to succeed. Years ago, I made a transformative decision: I gave myself permission to view mistakes not as failures but as stepping stones to growth. Each misstep became an opportunity to learn, adjust, and move forward with greater determination. Growing up, my mother often reminded me of Winston Churchill’s timeless wisdom: “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” Those words have been a constant source of hope and strength during life’s challenges.
One of my most defining experiences of resilience was immigrating to the United States. Raised in Ukraine, I moved to the U.S. in the 1990s, leaving behind the economic struggles and mindset of the Soviet Union. Adapting to America’s dynamic, opportunity-rich culture required immense courage, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to growth. I learned English, embraced a new way of life, and seized the opportunities this remarkable country offers. I went on to graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch and spent 12 years working in cardiology and internal medicine, treating patients with cardiovascular disease. During my years in practice, I began to recognize a troubling pattern: many chronic conditions stemmed from preventable factors like unhealthy lifestyles, poor eating habits, and weight-related issues. This realization inspired a shift in my focus to preventive medicine, aiming not only to treat but to empower patients to take charge of their health.
Three years ago, I took a leap of faith and launched a practice dedicated to addressing root causes, such as poor diet, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, and inactivity. Starting fresh came with its challenges, but with the unwavering support of my husband and family, I persevered. Today, I find profound fulfillment in guiding patients toward healthier, more balanced lives. Resilience has taught me that courage and passion are key to overcoming life’s hurdles. My message is simple: Be brave, follow your dreams, and never stop moving forward.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Every morning, as I enjoy a dry cappuccino (espresso with plenty of foam and no milk), I take a moment to mentally prepare for the day ahead. I review my clinic schedule, design personalized treatment plans for my patients, and send a few encouraging words or messages of support. The anticipation builds, and I feel energized—I truly love what I do. Helping my patients reach their weight loss goals, regain confidence, improve their health, and build lasting habits brings me immense joy and professional fulfillment.
Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, I moved to the U.S. almost 30 years ago. After graduating from the University of Texas Medical Branch, I spent the past decade working in cardiology and internal medicine in The Woodlands and Houston areas. Treating patients with various heart conditions, I noticed a clear correlation between unhealthy weight, lifestyle choices, and the development of chronic diseases. While genetics play a role, I realized that much of what I was seeing was preventable. This led to an epiphany—rather than focusing solely on treating advanced diseases, why not address the “elephant in the room”: unhealthy lifestyles and weight gain? The idea of focusing on prevention, rather than just treatment, deeply resonated with me.
I began incorporating weight loss strategies and nutritional education into my cardiology practice, and the results were transformative. Even modest weight loss led to significant improvements—reversing conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease. As much as I enjoyed working in cardiology, I found a deeper passion for preventive medicine. Helping people lose weight, regain their health, and build lasting healthy habits became my true calling.
Three years ago, I founded SlimGenetix, a personalized, genetically guided weight loss service. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built. At SlimGenetix, we offer comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique genetic makeup and biology. Our success rate is remarkable—patients achieve a 20–30% reduction in total body weight, compared to the industry average of 10%. This is because we don’t just prescribe medications; we craft individualized plans that address the root causes of weight gain and help patients build new, sustainable habits.
What sets us apart is our passion and commitment to our patients. We provide continuous support and guidance, ensuring that our patients can reach out anytime, anywhere, for advice, information, or even healthy recipes. In fact, I’ve spent the past 10 years collecting healthy recipes from around the world, and I’ve recently compiled them into a Healthy Cooking Recipes book that I share with my patients.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities of a successful business owner are passion for what you do, a commitment to continuous learning, and adaptability—without compromising your inner compass. My advice to new entrepreneurs is to learn the art of delegation. This was challenging for me at first because I love what I do and, naturally, thought I knew it all (just kidding!). But if you have a strong team, trust them and delegate effectively. If not, invest in building one. It’s far more rewarding to work alongside like-minded, enthusiastic people who share your vision.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is anyone eager to take control of their health, lose weight, and adopt healthier eating habits and lifestyle changes. While I often start working with women, who tend to be especially motivated and proactive in making these changes, I frequently find that they bring their partners along. Supporting couples in their health journey is incredibly fulfilling, as they can create a healthier environment together, making lifestyle changes easier and more sustainable through mutual commitment.
