Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophie Coran. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sophie with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I have a classical piano background and grew up spending a lot of time practicing music. I found it cathartic and really enjoyed the consistent exercise of playing piano and trying to develop a better understanding of music, technique, and repetition. Then, I went to music school for college and became accustomed to constantly practicing/writing/working. I really enjoy working a lot- I feel like I’m doing something good for my career and myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a singer-songwriter, pianist and composer based in Philly. My music combines indie, pop, jazz, soul, r&b, and alternative influences with diaristic lyrics. I started playing the piano and taking lessons when I was almost five-years-old. After studying classical composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music in NYC, I spent some time abroad traveling around Europe, then settling in London for a year, where I continued to pursue music. Eventually, I moved back to Philly, where I have been based ever since. In addition to being a singer-songwriter and performing my original music, I also arrange strings for other artists, which is something I’m really passionate about.
This year, I will be releasing new music, which I spent the last 3 years working on- needless to say, I am excited and ready for this new release cycle! I am also planning some touring as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that I often think about that have been helpful to my journey are: being a good person and being kind to those around you is really important; it’s a marathon not a sprint (good things take time), and that it always goes back to the song. If you keep going, eventually you start to get closer to where you want to be.
My advice for anyone who is in the early stages of their music career is to make sure this is really what you want to do, because it isn’t an easy path! After you’ve had those discussions with yourself, writing lots, and going out to shows and meeting other artists is great. Also, just try to do what feels most authentic to you! That’s always what will come across.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I have gotten quite used to the feeling of being overwhelmed, and at this point in my life I try to regulate those feelings as much as possible. Sometimes I’ll try to step away from what I’m doing for a moment and remind myself of the reality of the situation, and how I know that I will be able to accomplish my tasks. Usually, when I’m overwhelmed it’s because of deadlines, or I feel I have too much going on and I worry about completing it all. But I remind myself that I will finish everything. I’ll take a break and do something maybe less involved that makes me feel productive or safe, or I’ll go to the gym, go for a walk, or call a friend. Usually, it’s about timing. Certain tasks feel better at certain times of the day, so I try to align with that.
