Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vanity Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Vanity, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think imposter syndrome is something that comes when we are faced with new challenges. Someone once told me if you don’t feel imposter syndrome, you’re stepping into a room that is not big enough. They argued that imposter syndrome is good and it means you are stepping into a stretching season. So, I would say I overcome imposter syndrome by immersing myself in whatever challenge is before me. I allow myself to be stretched when God is trying to expand my mind and lead me down the path that He has created for me.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a 6x children’s book author that creates stories that focus on social emotional learning, self-discovery, and community. I own Emherge Press, my publishing company that I publish my books through as well as provide 1:1 consultations for aspiring children’s book authors. I am so proud of my 6 published children’s books- Jumping Beanie & The Mustard Seed, A Girl and Her Grandma, A Boy and His Grandma, A Girl and Her Grandpa, A Boy and His Grandpa, and A Crown Like Mine, all of which are available on Amazon!
As I fully immerse myself in the social emotional learning space, I am most proud that I create children’s books not only for kids, but the kid inside of all us. These stories have spoken deeply to multiple age groups and that is very special to me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Be a lifelong learner: If you want to be an expert in your craft, you have to constantly invest in learning multiple parts of your respective fields.
2. Challenge Perfectionism: If you wait too long to get projects over the finish line, trying to make them perfect- you will never reach the full potential of where God has you heading. It will never be perfect, but the best products/services/projects are those that are being built, launched, and refined on the go. Just go for it–with intentionality and determination.
3. Lean on Community: I’d strongly urge anyone to find and join a group of peers and experts that are in the field with you. It is so impactful to have others join your journey that encourage and inspire you.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth over the past 12 months has truly been overcoming perfectionism. As an entrepreneur, it is very easy to get so granular in the details that you waste time trying to make everything perfect. I have learned in the past year that chasing perfectionism will only hold me back.
I approach everything I do with detail and intentional thought. As long as that is my foundation, the things that I build and create do not have to be perfect. I have learned that the best businesses felt to the founders like they were building the plane while flying it. I now understand and share that same feeling.
