We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mylieghn Bui. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MyLieghn below.
Hi MyLieghn, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
My self-care practices vary depending on the day and my needs for that day.
There are certain practices that I keep up with religiously like my skin care routine. In the morning I wake up, brush and floss my teeth, clean my face, and apply witch hazel and moisturizer. For the rest of my skin, I apply a homemade body spray comprised of witch hazel and my favorite essential oils. Before going into the kitchen, I take time to clear off our bedside tables. I save any leftover water and tea for my plants in a watering can. Then I go into the kitchen, strain my overnight brewed herb, fill up on water, and prepare myself a nourishing breakfast.
From the time I get up to the time I move into the kitchen, I play an affirmation audio I created for myself. This affirmation audio has aided me in reprogramming my subconscious mind. From my understanding, our brains are most influenced by what we consume before bed and after waking up. Because of this, I am very mindful of what I consume before bed and after I wake up. I also have a music playlist that reminds me to let go of what no longer serves me. I usually play it while I write my dreams from the previous night.
Keeping a dream journal is another self-care practice of mine. Lately, I’ve been writing my dreams while I eat breakfast, but for anyone starting, I recommend doing it as soon as you wake up, still in bed. This practice has allowed me to recognize patterns from my subconscious. I believe our dreams and subconscious are connected to the spirit realm, so these patterns are crucial in understanding our own spiritual growth, the events happening around us, events to come, and guidance to the steps we need to take in our waking life.
In the afternoons, I enjoy a yoga practice and then laying down for a meditation. Most times, I’ll be down for about an hour or so, but 10-20 mins is my minimum. This time allows me to recenter and reconnect with the source energy within me. This practice brings me clarity and acts as a reset for the rest of my day. On days without this practice, I find myself pushing through the day and exhausted by the end of it. But with this, I find that I have more energy to make it through the day.
For bedtime preparation, I enjoy stretching, self massage, reading, journaling, and listening to relaxing music. My partner and I also have nightly snacks and tea. Before I brush and floss, I take a locally made reishi tincture to aid my sleep cycles. For me, I feel that I function best when I fall asleep feeling satiated and sleeping for at least 10 hours.
Each self-care practice has its own benefits, but overall these practices nourish my mind and body. If we’re not nourishing our mind and body, we are susceptible to illnesses and distractions of the mind. These practices are the foundation of the quality of my daily performance. Every day is different, so my daily needs are different as well. Listening to my body and slowing down when needed has been tough, but the difference in the way I move when I’m well rested is well worth the wait.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
BBXO Bakery LLC is a small batch gourmet tea cake, home bakery based in Baton Rouge, LA. The home bakery is run by me, MyLieghn Bui (my-lin boo-ee) with the support of my loving partner. I consider myself a baker, artist, and Jane of all trades. I enjoy creating art from various mediums: from cooking and baking to printmaking, drawing, singing, playing music, styling hair, and more.
In August 2021, I had a death in the family that prompted me to process the death of my eldest brother who passed in July 2003. At the time, I was in barber school and decided to take a 3 month leave to process. During my leave, the only consistent creative thing I did was bake and experiment with foods that brought me back to myself. I like to ground myself through food, specifically, hot tea and coffee. Oh how I LOVE the sweet smells!
There’s a local coffee shop that inspired me to make glazed tea breads. When I made my first Earl Grey tea bread with lemon lavender glaze, my partner had desired a batch of sugar cookies—in remembrance of his late grandmother. I had some left over glaze, so we decided to glaze a few of the sugar cookies to try. And so, our gourmet glazed tea cakes were born.
The general concept was born and I worked to cut back on the amount of granulated sugar and subbed in local honey. The glaze is pretty sweet on its own, so I wanted the cookie base to be less sweet. Through research, trial, and error, I was able to find tea cake recipes that worked well for me. I keep the tea cakes small and dense—the shape allows more airflow and flavor to come in each bite.
The original tea cakes are a honey-sugar cookie base with glazes that come in flavors like lemon lavender, lemon rose, and orange lavender. The fruit tea cakes are the honey-sugar cookie base swirled with strawberries or blueberries. The strawberry tea cake is paired with the lemon rose glaze, while the blueberry tea cake is paired with the lemon lavender glaze.
I also offer shareable tea cakes—think cookie cake, but with the cookie base and our gourmet glaze! The difference between the original tea cakes and the shareable is that the shareable slices are more crumbly, while the original are more buttery.
Our specialty tea cake flavor is the chocolate tea cake with Vietnamese coffee glaze—this one, I created in honor of my late Aunt Rose, who introduced me to Vietnamese coffee when she first came to the US.
Our gourmet glaze tea cakes are the perfect snack to pair with your favorite tea or coffee. They are also great for baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, and tea parties. Everything is made to order and is curated by a single person’s hands.
I am most proud of how these delicious tea cakes have been a way for me to transmute the grief that comes with this beautiful life. I love creating yummy & beautiful things from the pain I carry within. I pray that I can continue to share those creations with world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that are most impactful in my journey are resilience, patience, and grace.
Our resilience is our ability to adapt well to stress, trauma, adversity, etc. To me, it’s our ability to get back up when something in life has gotten us down. There will always be something out there that will get us down, but down stay there. Get back up and use the energy you received from that negative experience to create what you want to see in the world. For others beginning their journey, don’t be afraid to fail or pivot. These challenges come to teach us greater lessons on how to move forward, so long as we are open to receive them.
Patience is one of my greatest lessons in this lifetime. Great things take time. Nothing amazing happens over night. Just know that every little effort that you make with intention will all eventually add up and you’ll get to where you’re meant to be. Getting to where you want to be isn’t about getting that one big win; it’s about accruing the little wins that will eventually lead you to that big win. Slow down. Enjoy the process of creating the thing you want to see in this world.
Grace is another great lesson of mine in this lifetime. I practice having grace for myself when things aren’t moving in the ways I expect—I always expect things to go faster, but patience. Remember that you are only one person and it’s okay to ask for help. It is the same for how we relate to others, give them grace for the moments of miscommunication and honest mistakes.
As humans, we are social beings. I feel that we need to work together to create amazing things. I believe that it all begins within ourselves before we create the beautiful connections the world needs. Building resilience, patience, and grace within ourselves will build the capacity we have of those qualities for others. The quality of those skills will reflect in our relationships and our creations.
