Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Gabhart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kyle, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose began to take shape as a young boy, watching my grandfather and father build something far more valuable than wealth—they built legacies. My grandfather, a master storyteller, used his life lessons to inspire and empower those around him. My father followed in his footsteps, living a life of integrity and purpose that left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. From them, I learned that true success isn’t measured by what you achieve but by the impact you leave behind.
Those lessons became the foundation of my journey, culminating in a bold—and bald—decision that redefined my purpose. In 2020, the financial industry was in turmoil, and so were many of my clients. I knew I couldn’t continue down the same path. Leaving behind the stability of a large firm, I founded Bluegrass Legacy Group to provide my clients with the personalized care they deserved. It wasn’t easy—starting your own business never is—but it was absolutely worth it.
Today, when I work with families, I don’t just focus on their finances; I uncover their stories, aspirations, and the legacy they want to build. Through this leap of faith, I discovered something profound: my true passion isn’t just solving financial puzzles—it’s helping people write the next chapter of their lives. Whether mentoring couples, advising a family business, or cracking a few terrible dad jokes to ease the tension, my purpose is clear: to empower others to steward their gifts and leave a legacy they’ll be proud of.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At the heart of what I do is the desire to help others define and steward what matters most. As the Managing Partner of Bluegrass Legacy Group, I specialize in guiding families, small businesses, and non-profits through financial, tax, and estate considerations. But it’s not just about numbers—it’s about uncovering the stories, dreams, and values behind the balance sheets. Helping people turn their lives into legacies is what excites me most. It’s a privilege to walk alongside them as they pursue what truly matters, crafting legacies that will outlast them.
Beyond financial advising, I’m also passionate about strengthening marriages and relationships. My wife Tammy and I lead Equip Your Marriage, a ministry dedicated to equipping couples with the tools and encouragement they need to build strong, enduring relationships. We love helping couples rediscover connection and purpose in their journey together.
One of the most exciting developments in my life right now is my upcoming book, The Canteen: Abandon Self-Sufficiency and Fully Rely on God, which is set to release in the summer of 2025. This book is deeply personal to me—it’s rooted in my experiences growing up in Africa and the lessons I’ve learned about faith, reliance, and letting go of the myth of self-sufficiency. I hope it challenges and inspires readers to trust God fully and live with a deeper sense of purpose and reliance.
Through all of my work—whether it’s coaching clients, mentoring couples, writing, or speaking—my mission remains the same: to empower others to steward their gifts well, embrace their unique stories, and leave a meaningful legacy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities stand out as being most impactful in my journey: resilience, curiosity, and faith.
1. Resilience: Learning to Adapt and Persevere
The road hasn’t always been smooth—starting a business in the midst of economic uncertainty, for example, was no easy feat. Resilience has been critical for navigating challenges and setbacks without losing sight of my mission. My advice? See challenges as opportunities to grow. Build resilience by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and remembering that every setback is a setup for a comeback.
2. Curiosity: A Lifelong Commitment to Learning
From my early days consulting with Fortune 500 companies to creating euro-style board games, curiosity has driven me to explore new ideas, solve problems creatively, and approach each person’s story with an open mind. For those just starting out, I’d encourage you to stay curious. Read widely, ask questions, and never stop learning. Curiosity will not only deepen your expertise but also help you connect meaningfully with others.
3. Faith: Trusting in Something Greater
The most profound lesson I’ve learned is the importance of relying not on my own strength but on God’s. My upcoming book, The Canteen: Abandon Self-Sufficiency and Fully Rely on God, dives into this journey of surrender and trust. Faith has kept me grounded and given me a sense of purpose beyond myself. To those early in their journey, I’d say this: don’t try to go it alone. Seek guidance, lean into your faith, and trust the process even when it feels uncertain.
By cultivating resilience, nurturing curiosity, and anchoring yourself in faith, you’ll be better equipped to navigate your journey with purpose and impact. Whether you’re building a business, strengthening relationships, or pursuing creative passions, these qualities will help you steward your gifts and leave a lasting legacy.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I start by pausing to gain perspective. Overwhelm often comes from trying to carry too much at once, and that’s when I’m reminded of the central lesson in my upcoming book, The Canteen: Abandon Self-Sufficiency and Fully Rely on God. It’s a call to release the weight of self-reliance and trust in something greater.
Here are a few strategies that have been invaluable to me:
1. Prioritize and Simplify
When everything feels urgent, I take a step back and ask, What really matters right now? It’s easy to get caught up in the noise, but focusing on one or two key priorities helps me move forward without feeling paralyzed.
2. Lean on Community
I’ve learned that it’s okay—and often necessary—to ask for help. Whether it’s seeking advice from mentors, leaning on my wife Tammy, or sharing my struggles with trusted friends, having a strong support system makes a world of difference.
3. Recenter Through Prayer and Reflection
Faith plays a big role in how I navigate overwhelm. Taking time to pray, reflect, and remind myself of God’s sovereignty helps me find clarity and peace. It’s in those moments that I realize I don’t have to have all the answers.
4. Take a Break to Recharge
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is step away for a moment. Whether it’s playing a game with my kids, going for a run, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, a small reset can clear my mind and renew my energy.
My advice? When you’re overwhelmed, don’t try to muscle through it alone. Take time to refocus, lean on your faith and community, and remember that you’re not defined by your to-do list. It’s in those moments of surrender that we often find the strength and clarity to move forward.
