We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Freddy Jimenez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Freddy, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic originated from my family because I come from a long line of farm workers. I saw the sweat they put in to really achieve what they did and it inspired me. More recently, I find myself being inspired by my friends, mentors, and contemporaries. Being part of my community really gives me an insight to the amount of work and sacrifice it takes to achieve a certain level of success.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Freddy Jimenez and I’m from Coachella, California. I run Blue Hill Studios which is located in Indio, California. Originally, I started this company because I wanted to pursue music professionally and saw Blue Hill Studios as the way to accomplish that. I wanted to have screen printing as a fallback plan, but it eventually became my full-time job. As a company, we started focusing on commercial printing, but eventually we just drifted more towards art and collaborations with different artists for shop merchandise and fine art serigraph editions. That’s where we’re at right now. We’re still offering commercial printing, but there’s been kind of a shift in our path and it’s something we welcome. There are some exciting things we have in the works so please follow us on Instagram @bluehillstudios for updates.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were patience, perseverance, and passion. I had to realize that this is a lifelong journey and there is no quick way to success. I also realized to succeed you have to be working towards something you really love and be ready to sacrifice a lot for the vision. That’s the advice I would have for anyone who is early in their journey: approach business as something you really love because you suffer a lot for it. You need to have faith in your craft and be very stubborn.
How would you describe your ideal client?
Usually it’ll be pretty obvious when someone is experienced with the process and we see it right away. They have the proper artwork, the substrate they would like to print on, and a working budget. However, we welcome anybody who is willing to invest in themselves and would be happy to help guide them through the process of making their first round of merch or prints.
